ASUS’s TUF line has been one of the most reliable series for gamers looking for a balance between performance and portability. The 2024 ASUS TUF Gaming A16 takes that reputation and injects it with a significant boost, particularly with the integration of AMD’s Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370 processor and AMD XDNA™ NPU. Having tested this machine directly after their A14 model, I can confidently say that this combination makes it a standout, especially for those looking to save power during portable use and get better efficiency in gaming.

First Impressions & Build Quality

Right out of the box, the A16 feels solid. It carries that signature TUF military-grade design with the durability to match. If you’ve used the TUF Gaming A14 2024 model, the build will feel familiar. However, the A16 takes it up a notch in terms of size and screen real estate. At 16 inches, it gives you that extra space for multitasking and immersing yourself in games, without making the laptop feel too bulky. Where I was particularly impressed is how ASUS managed to integrate a performance-driven AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370 Processor in such a portable machine. It allows for incredible multitasking and optimized gaming efficiency while managing battery life impressively when on the go. This is a huge leap forward for gamers like me who rely on our laptops to stay powerful even when unplugged. You notice the impact right away when switching between tasks or firing up a demanding game like Cyberpunk 2077 or Starfield.

The 16-inch FHD display on the A16 is as sharp as I expected, offering great color depth and brightness. The 144Hz refresh rate really makes games look fluid, and for content creators, the larger screen offers plenty of workspace. ASUS didn’t skimp on the TUF line’s trademark durability, either. The laptop is built to withstand the bumps and knocks of everyday use, and I appreciated how solid it felt despite being packed with high-end tech.

This is the feature that sets the TUF Gaming A16 apart. The AMD Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370 processor paired with AMD XDNA™ NPU allows the laptop to perform incredibly well under pressure. This setup is particularly efficient when it comes to battery management. During my use, I found that while gaming on battery power, the laptop maintained better performance for a longer period than I’ve experienced with most other gaming laptops. It’s the AI smarts kicking in to balance power consumption and efficiency. While running some AI-heavy tasks or pushing the limits with gaming, I could see that the XDNA™ NPU steps in to take the load off the CPU. This NPU is capable of up to 50TOPS (Tera Operations Per Second), which helps with AI-related tasks or when the laptop is pushing through high-frame-rate gameplay. The AI learns and adapts based on usage, ensuring that it gives the best performance without drawing too much power on the GPU. It’s something I found particularly beneficial for games in general as it can help with rendering potential while maintaining longer battery life.

Gaming Performance

The A16 is more than up to the task. Even when compared to the ASUS TUF Gaming A14, which I reviewed just weeks before, the A16 pulls ahead thanks to the added AI power. Both laptops performed admirably across a range of titles, but the A16’s larger screen and processing edge made it my go-to for extended sessions. The 144Hz refresh rate and adaptive sync give smooth performance in fast-paced shooters like Call of Duty: Warzone or Fortnite. Frame rates were stable across all the AAA titles I tested, and the laptop never felt overly warm, thanks to a robust cooling system. For the most part, the performance is relatively the same as the A14 model – the key difference is bigger size, stable frames and potential for greater performance over time with its AI integration.

On the flip side, I did notice one minor issue while switching between different applications. Occasionally, the screen brightness would flicker, and at times, the display would go black for a second or two. I believe this is some form of communication lag between the CPU and NPU when they’re working together. It feels like a “tick” in the backend programming, something that could probably be resolved with a software update. It’s not a dealbreaker and doesn’t happen often at all, but definitely something that can occur when multitasking with different applications open.

Again, having reviewed the A14 recently, it’s hard not to draw comparisons. The A14 impressed me with its compact size, portability, and overall performance. But the A16 feels like a step up in terms of versatility. The extra screen size really does make a difference for me, which is something I prefer overall – it’s just highly beneficial for multitaskers. The key difference here, though, is the AMD XDNA™ NPU. The A14 holds its own as a great portable gaming laptop, but the A16’s AI-based enhancements push it ahead – feels a bit more future-proofed in comparison. If you’re torn between the two, it really depends on how much you value the extra AI performance boost and screen real estate.

REVIEW SCORE: 9/10

The 2024 ASUS TUF Gaming A16 is an excellent upgrade for those looking for AI-powered performance in a gaming laptop. Its Ryzen™ AI 9 HX 370 Processor and XDNA™ NPU make a huge difference in both power efficiency and gaming performance, and the larger 16-inch display provides an immersive experience that’s hard to beat. The flickering brightness issue is a minor drawback, but it’s something that could be resolved with a future update.

If you’re deciding between the A16 and the TUF Gaming A14, the choice comes down to how much you value AI-powered enhancements and a larger screen. For me, the A16 feels like the more versatile option and one that’s better equipped for handling the demands of the next generation of gaming.

Pros:

  • Durable and well-built for everyday use
  • Super quiet

Cons:
