Whenever I get the opportunity to get my hands on any Acer Predator laptop. I jump. I’ve been a fan of them for as long as I’ve been gaming on PC and laptops so let me tell you before I start this review, I’m a little biased, but not without objectivity.
As of recently and probably close to the last month or so, I’ve been using the Acer Predator Helios Neo 14 and I’ve played every game imaginable. After doing all of this, I can say that, the Acer Predator never fails and this new iteration of the Helios Neo is a portable powerhouse
DESIGN, PORTS AND OVERALL LOOK
The design of the Predator Helios Neo 14 is all about sleek. For a gaming machine as powerful as this one it’s quite thin and light and it’s perfect for gaming on the go as well as the gaming laptop that just sits on your desk. The form factor is what you want to see for a gaming laptop made in 2024. You might even forget there’s a 4070 in there.
You get a cool backlit Predator logo and once you pop the lid you see that 14.5 screen and a full keyboard, backlit of course and all the RGB that you want. It’s all wrapped in a flat matte type metal finish. This is a premium gaming laptop and it didn’t feel cheap in any way. Coming in at just slightly over 4lbs, you can easily throw this laptop in your backpack with the rather light ac adapter and play your games anywhere. The design of this machine isn’t mindblowing or overly sexy. It’s just clean. Some may like and some may not.
As far as ports go, you have 2 (USB 3.0) ports, 2 (Type-C), 1 (HDMI 2.1) and 1 (Micro SD card) port. Nothing here that isn’t standard. Of course we could always use more ports but that’s just us being spoiled. Everything you need is here.
BATTERY LIFE
Battery life on any gaming laptop is always going to be contentious and there’s not really a way to be satisfied completely. The Acer Predator Helios Neo 14 does battery life pretty well. Of course, this will change based on games being played and or whether or not you’re using complex apps, streaming, whatever. In this review I used this on battery solely for gaming.
I only play a few games regularly and for me, the games I play are rather intense graphically. I played Destiny 2, Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree and Space Marine 2. On average with those games. I got about 3 hours give or take even if I was only playing on 1080p, it was a little less playing natively on higher settings but even still, it wasn’t bad. Even with Predator Sense configured in a balanced mode setting, the games I played would kick the laptop into a different mode to adjust for cooling and performance. The time I did get to play those games even for that 3 hours or so for me wasn’t at all bad. There’s a 76Whr battery in this machine and you’ll get every bit of juice out of it effectively.
COOLING
Cooling on a gaming laptop is probably THE most important thing when if you plan on using your gaming laptop as your primary gaming machine. This machine I found did a very good job of keeping cool while I played.
Thermal design on the Predator Helios Neo 14 features a dual fan system that includes Acer’s own engineered AeroBlade 3D metal fan that coupled with their vector heat pipe design keeps this machine pretty cool especially when playing resource intense games when you need your laptop to be cool the most. Even during lengthy gaming sessions the fans stayed pretty quiet relative to what you might typically hear from the fans during gaming in length. They ramped up when they needed to but not so much that you couldn’t hear what you were watching or playing.
PREDATOR SENSE

The Predator Sense software has always been a part of the Predator series laptops and each update of the current software gets better in terms of its uses and customizations for how you like to game. The Predator Sense software is currently at 5.0 and as always you can control fan speeds, RGB, optimize RAM and battery, Not much to this software but it is useful if you choose to use it, nothing negative or positive to say about it. It’s just available to you when you buy this laptop. Simple.
GAMING ON THE PREDATOR HELIOS NEO 14

I played a ton of games from the smaller indie titles, some retro games and of course, the types of games why you would buy a laptop like this. This review session included, Destiny 2: The Final Shape running at 1920 x 1080 avg 101fps and at 2560 x 1440 at about 80fps. Elden Ring at native resolution (3072 x 1920) averaging anywhere between about 30- 35 fps and at 1080p Elden Ring ran closer to 60fps pretty consistently, I did notice that in the Elden Ring DLC (Shadow of the Erdtree), the boss battles in particular did crank up those fans, Space Marine 2 I played at native res getting a pretty consistent 30-35 frames just like Elden Ring although Space Marine 2 is a tough game to measure because it’s so involved with creatures and elaborate scenery throughout the game but still it played fine natively and even better toned down to 2560 x 1440 or even 1080p.
Playing all of your games is not a problem for this machine at all because of its raw CPU power coupled with that 4070 GPU. The somewhat hefty price point does seem to validate itself when you’re playing all of these high quality games on this machine. Gaming on the Acer Predator Helios Neo 14 is top notch. I genuinely have nothing
SPECS

The Predator Helios Neo 14 is a powerhouse and for the sake of this review Acer loaned me their best version all decked out. With this machine I was able to get the best sense of what gaming would be like on this machine from just a hardware perspective. You can take a look below and see this is a serious machine but Acer does have another Nvidia RTX 4060 Intel Core Ultra 7 option for the Predator Helios Neo 14 if this one isn’t for you. Both are beasts.
- 14.5-inch (16:10), WQXGA+ (3072 x 1920), 165 Hz, 400 nits, 100% sRGB
- Intel Core Ultra 9 processor 185H
- GeForce NVIDIA RTX 4070 Laptop GPU (overclockable)
- 32 GB LPDDR5X 6400 MHz memory
- 1 TB PCIe Gen4 NVMe M.2 SSD
THE ACER PREDATOR HELIOS NEO 14 IS A POWERFUL GAMING LAPTOP THAT YOU’LL LOVE
The Acer Predator Helios Neo 14 is a beast of a gaming laptop, no doubt. If you want to play the most high quality PC games in a lightweight and aesthetically pleasing form factor then this is a machine that you may want to consider. Keep in mind though that for all of this high end hardware, you will pay for it. The cost for this machine that I used for the past month is $1699 which is expensive relatively but right in line of what it would cost for it’s desktop counterpart if not much less. It’s fair but still a little steep. Once again, there is a secondary option with an RTX 4060 at $1499 which may be better for you and you won’t have any inability to play the games you like, you just may have to play them as a lower resolution for certain games but no big deal.
The Predator Helios Neo 14 has been a pleasure to use. Gaming laptops are much improved and some stand out more so than others. The Acer Predator series has always been one of the best in gaming with their laptops and that holds true here. There are some drawbacks. The keyboard on the Helios Neo 14 isn’t as tactile as I would have liked it to be for a gaming laptop, the keys are a little too squishy. The brightness on the Helios Neo 14 could be better but my cons about this machine are nitpicky details if I’m being honest. You get everything you want in a gaming machine and you’ll love it even though it’ll cost you but hey? Gaming is a bit of a costly hobby.
