I am one who desires quality and power when gaming on the go; with a slew of options available, gaming laptops often blend into a sea of similar specs and designs – that’s where ASUS TUF Gaming A14 stands out with its performance, durability, and thoughtful features. As a gaming laptop that doesn’t compromise on either power or portability, the TUF Gaming A14 offers a compelling package for gamers and creators alike. I’ll be delving into its technical specifications, performance benchmarks, and how it stacks up against some of my favorite and most demanding titles such as Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, and the recently released Black Myth: Wukong.
Built to Last
I have to talk about its presentation first – it’s worth noting the A14’s build design, which embody the ruggedness and reliability that its series is known for, features a military-grade durability certification (MIL-STD-810H), which means it’s built to withstand drops, vibrations, extreme temperatures, and humidity. Not to mention it is extremely light for the immense power it’s showcasing – weighing about 3.5lbs. The exterior design is both modern and functional, featuring a striking aesthetic with a robust chassis that can handle rough use without issues. The laptop’s 14-inch display, with a 165Hz refresh rate and WQXGA resolution, is a highlight for me. G-SYNC support is crucial for a smooth gaming experience, reducing screen tearing and stuttering by synchronizing with the GPU – especially works well with the 4060 built in – more on how it performs in a bit.
Hardware That’s Hard to Pass Up
The A14 is powered by the AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS processor, a high-performance CPU designed to handle the latest in gaming. With a base clock speed of 3.2 GHz and a turbo boost of up to 5.0 GHz, the Ryzen 7 8845HS offers substantial power. This processor is built on Zen 4 architecture, which provides enhanced performance and efficiency compared to previous generations. A14 is equipped with the NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 mobile chip, featuring a max TGP of 130W. This GPU leverages NVIDIA’s DLSS 3.5 technology and ray tracing capabilities, making it highly capable of rendering the latest games with high graphical fidelity. That means running games like CS:GO, Destiny 2, Overwatch will yield incredible FPS while maintaining visual fidelity. Rudimentary benchmarking for these sorts of games averaged well over the 165Hz spec at 1600p – which is insane when trying to compete on the go.
The laptop comes with 16GB of DDR5 RAM, providing decent memory for gaming and multitasking – although I wouldn’t have anything else open other than Discord. DDR5 offers improved bandwidth and efficiency compared to DDR4, which is particularly beneficial for high-demand applications and games. The 1TB M.2 SSD provides rapid data access and ample storage for games, applications, and media. Effective cooling is crucial in gaming laptops, and the TUF Gaming A14 addresses this with a pair of ultra-thin 89-blade Arc Flow Fans. These fans are designed to handle the high-power output of the CPU and GPU, maintaining optimal temperatures even under heavy load. Much like other products in ASUS, the laptop supports Turbo Mode outputting 110W, which allows for enhanced performance during demanding tasks. There are dedicated key functions on the interface of the laptop for easy power switching and access to their proprietary Amory Crate (which has seen some significant improvement lately.)
The inclusion of a MUX (Multiplexer) switch in the A14 is a significant feature for gamers. This switch allows the laptop to route frames directly from the dedicated GPU (dGPU) to the display, bypassing the integrated GPU (iGPU). This results in a 5-10% performance boost in gaming. Advanced Optimus further enhances this feature by automatically switching between the iGPU and dGPU based on the task, which optimizes battery life and performance.
OK, But How Does It Perform?
To provide a comprehensive view of the TUF Gaming A14’s performance, I’ve tested it with several of my favorite high-demanding games. I went into the benchmark results for Cyberpunk 2077, Destiny 2, Baldur’s Gate 3, and the recently released behemoth Black Myth: Wukong. These titles represent a range of genres and performance demands, offering what I think is a well-rounded look into the performance of this machine.
Cyberpunk 2077
I tested the game at Ultra settings with ray tracing enabled. The RTX 4060 GPU handled the game as well as I could hope at 1600p, delivering an average of 57-68fps. DLSS 3.5 of course further improves with frame generation, allowing for smoother gameplay without significant drops in visual quality.
Destiny 2
To no surprised for those that follows G Style Mag, I ran Destiny 2 at max settings, and with relatively busy screen, the game ran at an average 70-85FPS – lowering some settings would easily yield the maximum 165fps especially for crucible matches.
Baldur’s Gate 3
I tested the game at Max settings. The Ryzen 7 8845HS’s multi-core performance shone through as this game is more CPU demanding, delivering an average of 66-74 FPS @1600p. The RTX 4060 handled the game’s detailed environments and complex effects well, providing a solid and immersive RPG experience.
Black Myth: Wukong
I first used the Benchmarking Tool available before launch and I was surprised with how demanding the game is. Testing the game at High settings with ray tracing enabled after launch yielded the same average frame rate of 55-65 FPS. After putting some time, I can see why – the developers did not hold back in fidelity and that’s exactly what I love about gaming.
