MSI is known for making a myriad of PC gaming hardware. Most notably, their motherboards, graphic cards (GPU), and laptops. They do however also make some fairly good accessories as well have definitely been improving in that department with each subsequent release. Take for instance the new MSI Clutch GM11 Lightweight. This is a series gaming mouse for serious gamers and is a great compliment for those who maybe want to match up all their MSI gear.
At first glance, it almost looks like the GM11 mouse I was sent previously, but in black. Besides the looks, however, that is where the similarities end. The GM41 Lightweight mouse is unassuming. It’s a black, symmetrical, wireless mouse. In fact, it only has one spot on the mouse that has RGB lighting, and that would be MSI’s signature Dragon logo. But where it lacks in looks, it makes up for in performance.
The mouse itself looks similar but upon handling it for the first time, I realize that yes, it is symmetrical but also longer than the GM11 we previously looked at, and slightly shorter in height. The extra length actually provides more palm support making this mouse very comfortable to use.
The switches and buttons are where this mouse shines. On the inside are MSI’s OMRON switches that are rated for 60-million clicks. Upon clicking you, you’re met with a crip mechanical feel with very little mush that spring back quickly, ready for your next headshot. This goes for the two buttons on the left side as well which are large and easy to access.
A nice feature is the rubberized diamond pattern on both sides, making the mouse easy to grip with very little slip. It is functional yet attractive and adds to what is a pretty spartan appearing mouse.
The scroll wheel is great. It also has a rubberized diamond texture and has great feedback. You can really feel the separate notches while scrolling, granted, it’s not as satisfying or mechanical feeling as the buttons but works very well.
The DPI button has been moved to the bottom of the mouse and provides 5 presets at 400, 800, 1600 (default), 3200, and 6400 DPI. When pressing it, the Dragon logo changes colors indicating which DPI level you are at, so there is no guessing game. On the opposite side of the DPI button, is your on/off switch.
While using the mouse I instantly noticed how smooth and fast this mouse moves. The Pure PTFE skates really provide a frictionless experience.
The GM41 is comes with a charging dock that is again, simple-looking, but upon inspection, you realize the wireless USB dongle installed in the dock. This dongle (2.4G RF Wireless) can be removed and stored inside the front of the mouse for transport, which is a handy feature. A high-quality braided USB cord is also included in the box. It can be connected to the dock for charging, or plugged directly into the mouse if you ever run out of power and need a quick fix to continue work or play.
When docked, the Dragon glows indicating charging status, and almost looks like it is floating on your desk. The only somewhat negative feedback I would give about the dock itself is that since it is considerably smaller than the mouse, placing the mouse on the dock can be a little finicky at first since the mouse will totally cover the dock. You will need to match the two gold prongs to the bottom of the mouse. It took me a couple of tries to match it properly for charging. After a few times, I realized the bottom of the mouse is grooved to match the dock, and then it became easier. Charging time is very fast. 10 minutes of charging can give you up to 9 hours of battery life, and 90 minutes gives you a full charge from 0%.
I have not tested the stated 80 hours of use however since I usually turn the mouse off when I leave the house but it is good to know you can get a quick charge in if necessary.
Lastly, let’s talk about weight. At 65 grams, this is an ultra-lightweight mouse. This is very comparable to others, such as the SteelSeries Aerox 3, which is notable because the MSI Clutch GM41 Lightweight doesn’t have a bunch of holes punched into it. I’m not entirely sure what they did to achieve this without having to cut away at the body, but the Clutch GM41 Lightweight will be easier to clean and you won’t have to worry about things getting stuck inside the mouse.
The Clutch GM41 Lightweight is a great mouse by MSI. It is packed full of features that put it right into the fray of a very competitive lightweight gaming mouse market. Simple, yet effective. Stealthy, yet high-performing. I recommend you give it a chance because you’ll miss it if you don’t give it a second look.
