Rokinon recently announced its latest autofocusing lens for Sony’s E-Mount cameras – the Rokinon AF 45mm F1.8 Compact Lens. Designed as a carry-around lens, Rokinon hopes to amend the old adage – “the best camera is the one that’s with you” to include “with this lens attached.” If you’ve recently made the transition into Sony’s full-frame mirrorless cameras and are looking for a good, daily-use prime, here’s what you can expect from the AF 45mm F1.8 Compact Lens.

A Nifty-Fifty Alternative?
While the first lens many new photographers will ultimately end up purchasing is a low-priced, 50mm f/1.8 lens (every manufacturer makes a version of this budget prime), Rokinon is hoping you buck the trend by considering a slightly wider focal length in their AF 45mm F1.8. According to their press release, the 45mm lens provides a more natural angle of view while still being able to provide a compact, lightweight, go-everywhere lens. You’ll still be able to shoot street, portraits, landscapes and everything else, you’ll also get just a bit more coverage in your composition. (As a side note, 45mm is the focal length on my Canon QL17 and makes for a great street photography film camera.)
If you’re looking for an alternative to the 50mm The Rokinon AF 45mm F1.8 Compact Lens is expected to be available this June for an MSRP of $399.
