You look into any car today and I bet the one item most of them have that doesn’t come with the car is some kind of smartphone holder. I bet if you look over at the car next to you in traffic, they probably have something like a windshield mount or a dashboard mount that grips their smartphone in place like a vise. While these are terrific for keeping your phone in place, they can also be annoying as trying to get your smartphone in or out can be a chore. With that said, magnetic mounts are another option that is also quite popular, but with the increasing size of smartphones these days, older magnetic mounts have trouble with the added weight. That’s why iOttie has a new magnetic mount that features two magnets instead of one. The iOttie iTap Magnetic 2 is said to be more powerful and not only able to hold larger devices, but also devices with cases on.
The version of the iOttie iTap Magnetic 2 I’m checking out is the air vent mount unit. What that means is that the mount clips onto the air mount. This is convenient for people who don’t want to mount anything to their windshield or dashboard and want something that can be easily removed if need be. It also takes up very little space.
The iOttie iTap Magnetic 2 air vent mount includes the mount itself and two metal plates you use on your smartphone. One is for placing on the outside of a case if that’s how you want to go while the other goes in-between the phone and the case, if you rather do it this way. It adheres via double sided tap so it’s very easy to install. The vent mount itself gets clipped to one of your air vents. Adjust the angle you want it to be at and then twist a piece on the back to tighten. That’s all there is to it. To place your smartphone on the mount, just move it towards the mount and it’ll magnetically stick to where you placed those metal plates on your phone. To remove, just pull. That simple.
How well does it stay on? Pretty darn well. Thanks to the dual magnet setup, the iOttie iTap Magnetic 2 is very strong and keeps your phone held in place quite well. You can stick it in either landscape or portrait mode and in most circumstances, your phone will stay put, even over light bumps and vibrations. Note however that the best position to mount those metal plates on your device is in the middle. This can interfere with wireless charging if you use that so keep that in mind. To use in conjunction with wireless charging, it’s recommended that you move the metal plate either above or below where the charging contact would be. This however can affect the stability of how it mounts to the iOttie iTap Magnetic 2.
Overall, I’d say if you’re looking for a magnetic style mount, you really can’t go wrong with the iOttie iTap Magnetic 2. In my experience so far, it is by far the strongest I’ve used so far, most likely due to using two magnets instead of just one. If you’re not a fan of the air vent style mount, you can also go for a CD slot mount or a dash mount. All use the same magnets and cost the same amount of money.
