If you’re an APS-C Photographer or Vlogger who’s been looking for a fast, wide-angle prime, then the new Sigma 15mm F1.4 DC | Contemporary might be exactly what you’ve been looking for. The soon-to-be-released lens marks a significant evolution in Sigma’s crop-sensor lens family, offering photographers and content creators portability without skimping on optical performance, i.e., image quality. Here’s what we know so far.
Size Matters – The Sigma 15mm F1.4 DC | Contemporary Ditches Size and Weight, not Quality

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, the Sigma 15mm f1.4 DC Contemporary miniaturizes a large-aperture lens – an f1.4 in this case – and squeezes it into a 2.5-inch x 2.6-inch package that weighs less than 8 ounces. For comparison, this f/1.4 Contemporary lens is 30% shorter and 50% lighter than its predecessor, the 16mm F1.4 DC DN. The size and weight of the Sigma 15mm F1.4 DC Contemporary alone make it a solid option for travel photographers or vloggers who might need a 24-ish mm lens that won’t tip over a gimbal.
Another standout feature for me is the inclusion of a dedicated aperture ring. I’ve been a Fujifilm shooter for several years, and I’ve always loved the tactile experience of shooting with multiple dials and working aperture rings on the lenses. I’m happy to see Sigma’s included a physical control to set your aperture.
For videographers, Sigma promises that this lens is made with hybrid shooters in mind. Sigma’s stepping motor enables near-silent, high-speed autofocusing while reducing focus breathing. This is a huge boon for videographers as they’ll find smoother video even as you or your subject moves across the frame.
Who This Lens is For
The Sigma 15mm F1.4 DN Contemporary lens can easily find a home in the gear bag of anyone into travel, both photography and videography, vloggers who primarily shoot run-and-gun style, and astrophotographers who need the wide-angle and fast aperture for shooting in near-total darkness, but also, and very specifically, crop-sensor Canon photographers. For a while, I’ve been thinking about the lack of third-party options for Canon photographers and how costly full-frame lenses can be for that system.
What makes this lens particularly special for Canon photographers is that Sigma is working with Canon under license to develop these lenses, meaning they should not stop working whenever Canon releases updated firmware for their cameras. If you’ve ever shot Sony with many Chinese-made, third-party lenses, you’ll know that camera firmware updates can turn your glass into very expensive paper weights. I’m glad to see that Canon is not only opening up its mount for third-party development, but that Sigma is also one of the lens manufacturers developing lenses for these cameras. Now, if only someone at Sigma and/or Canon could add full-frame lens options, I’ll be one very pleased photographer.
