Housemarque returned to the spotlight during yesterday’s State of Play with the full gameplay debut of Saros, its spiritual follow-up to Returnal. The studio confirmed a March 20, 2026 release date for PlayStation 5.
The reveal trailer introduces Arjun Devraj, a Soltari enforcer voiced by Rahul Kohli, who ventures across the alien world of Carcosa. This planet, cloaked in eclipse, constantly shifts, ensuring no two runs are the same. Much like Returnal, Saros thrives on bullet-hell firefights and fast-paced traversal, but it layers in new systems that set it apart.
Combat now features the Soltari Shield, which absorbs incoming projectiles and lets players throw energy back at enemies. A Power Weapon mechanic delivers devastating charged attacks, while a Second Chance revival gives you one opportunity to rise again mid-run. Progression is less punishing this time—upgrades to weapons, suits, and loadouts carry across attempts, ensuring each death contributes to long-term growth.
The atmosphere is striking. Carcosa’s landscapes blend alien flora, ancient ruins, and surreal architecture, immersing players in a world that feels both alive and hostile. Storytelling will unfold through voiceover, holographic echoes, and environmental clues, weaving Arjun’s search for answers into each cycle.
With Saros, Housemarque looks to refine the formula that won acclaim with Returnal. Its new mechanics promise a mix of relentless action and meaningful progression, while its world pushes atmosphere and narrative to the forefront. March 2026 is now circled as the studio’s boldest step yet.
