Who It’s For

Years ago, when shopping for a Sony a7II after trading in my Samsung NX gear I was worried about buying the right lens replacements for the new system. While I was able to get a decent trade-in value for my old gear, I was still going to have to invest in the new gear and I knew I would be purchasing a full-frame camera and an 85mm portrait lens, but I needed an all-around workhorse lens that covered most other focal lengths. Most manufacturers have a 24-ish to 105-ish medium zoom lens in their catalogs, but most do not have a constant F2.8 aperture. Those that do will gladly separate you from your money for the privilege.

And this is exactly who the Sigma 28-105mm F2.8 ART lens is made for. Whether you’re a hobbyist photographer who dabbles in video creation or an event photographer who needs an all-around lens this lens promises to be a no/low compromise lens that you can keep on your camera (in my case, stuck onto a B camera for shoot days). Like all ART series lenses, you can expect a solidly constructed lens with sharp images from the center through the edges. While we have not had the chance to test it ourselves, we’re excited about a replacement for all those F4 “upgrade” kit lenses that are the norm at your local camera shop.

Pricing and Availability

The Sigma 28-105mm F2.8 ART lens can easily be the first lens you should buy for many people. Its lightweight and compact design begs for you to carry it about and the constant F2.8 aperture means it should perform well in low light and when making portraits. It’s a solid lens that is very well priced at $1499. You can pick one up later this month (September 2024) or preorder on Sigma’s website. (Sigma)
