Sony ZV-E1 flat laid on a wooden board background

It’s positioned as an entry-level, full-frame video-first camera powered by the same image processor found in the Sony a7 V and the video capabilities of the Sony FX3. But this isn’t a Sony FX3 and it’s also not quite as versatile as the a7 V. But it is really, really good at making some videos.

Sony ZV-E1 Tech Specs

    • Auto Microphone Directivity

Using the Sony ZV-E1 is like…

The biggest draw to most is that, unlike the FX3 which will set you back close to 4 grand, is that you can easily purchase the Sony ZV-E1 for around 2200 dollars US. It’s a lot easier to find in a Best Buy or similar brick-and-mortar store. The camera also takes advantage of Sony’s proprietary digital hot shoe if you spring for any of their supported microphones on other accessories. And yes, it will work with all FE-mount lenses available on the system. Oh, and it’s weather sealed.

What you don’t get are some serious quality-of-life benefits that are exclusive to the FX line of cameras – namely active cooling and better passive cooling (namely fans and built-in heat sinks). If you’re looking for a viewfinder, you won’t find one here either. Since this camera is primarily geared toward vloggers and similar video content creators, Sony emphasized the large flip out screen over a viewfinder. In practice, it feels like the Sony ZV-E1 is missing something. I often found myself bringing the camera to my eye only to be disappointed that I wasn’t met with an EVF and had to adjust. For the vlogging creator, this might be less of a deal breaker than it is for me; yes, you absolutely could use this camera to take pictures but if you’re looking for a stills camera, other options make far better sense.

Final thoughts

The Sony ZV-E1 is something of an anomaly in the camera line up. As part of Sony’s vlogger line, it sits at the top of the food chain full frame, interchangeable lens camera that’s seemingly built for video capture. But as for what’s the best for making video content even more specifically, cinematic content other options may make a better tool on the job like the a7SIII or the FX30 (keeping it in the sorry family). If you’re willing to look outside the Sony ecosystem, then even more options open up at a similar price range. Overall, the ZV-E1 has a feature set that will be the talk of YouTube content creators, but it comes with something of a glass ceiling and that’s a shame.
