Even though we’re a couple of days past the The Game Awards it’s still very much the talk of the gaming zeitgeist. Everybody has their opinions about who “won” and who had the best showing but this writer and gamer. The biggest and best surprise was what SEGA had shown off in a 90 second video.

SEGA has been cooking quietly and for good reason. SEGA is remaking 5 of its most iconic and fan favorite titles for 2024 and beyond. That’s right. Not remasters, REMAKES. Jet Set Radio, Shinobi, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, and Crazy Taxi are all being remade and updated with new content and all new looks. If you look in the video, Golden Axe has gone full 3-D with co-op. Jet Set Radio has fresh new graphics. Crazy Taxi has new vehicles and much faster sense of speed, Streets of Rage has a new look and Shinobi is essentially a whole new game.

This was a surprising announcement that I did not see coming or anyone else for that matter. In my humble opinion, SEGA stole the show and had the most shocking announcement at The Game Awards. Yes, my nostalgia and my old school nature has me biased but these are games that were pivotal in my early gaming years with the Sega Genesis. It was great to see and I’m excited about these games. Of course, SEGA gave us no release dates for any of these games at all but who cares, from what we saw we can see that they are well into development and we should expect them soon. We’ll keep you posted once we know more but I’m hoping to see at least one of these titles release in the summer or fall of 2024.
