Maisie Williams as Rahne Sinclair Wolfsbane

This has had quite a rocky journey getting to this point. With many delays, reshoots and no release date in sight, many believed (I include myself in this) in Disney acquiring 20th Century Fox shake-up “The New Mutants” would not see the light of day. That was until a few weeks ago when Director Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars) reassured us that not only will the film be released, but it will be a cut of the film he himself supervised.

“The New Mutants,” an original horror thriller set in an isolated hospital where a group of young mutants is being held for psychiatric monitoring. When strange occurrences begin to take place, both their new mutant
abilities and their friendships will be tested as they battle to try and make it out alive. Loaded with extremely talented cast including, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as their mentor Dr. Cecilia Reyes.

Anya Taylor-Joy as Illyana Rasputin/Magik

Based on the Marvel comic of the same name and created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod. After filming wrapped on The New Mutants, Fox chairman and CEO Stacey Snider compared the setting and tone of the film as “Breakfast Club detention/Cuckoo’s Nest institutional setting”, and described the film as “a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like “The Shining”. This movie may be the first Marvel feature to fall in the horror genre.

X-Men: The New Mutants arrives on April 13, 2018.
