Based on the original stage show by Andrew Lloyd Webber, ‘CATS’ made its debut in the early ’80s and still to this day remains one of the most beloved, as well as highest-grossing and longest-running productions in Broadway History. In doing research about this article I was surprised to learn that it was inspired by ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’, a 1939 poetry collection by author and playwright T.S. Eliot.

The story revolves a tribe of cats called the Jellicles must decide yearly which one will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and come back to a new Jellicle life. Directed by Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech, The Danish Girl, Les Misérables) from a script that he co-wrote with Lee Hall (Victoria & Abdul, War Horse, Rocketman), the film features an stunning roster including James Cordon, Judi Dench, Jason Derulo, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Ian McKellen, Taylor Swift, Rebel Wilson, and Royal Ballet dancer Francesca Hayward.

Yesterday, Universal Pictures released a sneak-peek of what it takes to bring the film to life, and I was shocked by the stunning detail being brought to the screen, including choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler (who also choreographed the recent Broadway revival of “Cats”) and Hamilton.

“Cats” arrives in theaters this Christmas season on December 20th, 2019.
