While Marvel Studios dominated the comic-movie landscape this year will as many as three feature releases. 20th Century Fox gave it a strong start with Logan, the only Fox/Marvel release this year. 2018 ups the ante with Fox/Marvel releasing as many as three. Deadpool 2 is set for June 1st, X-Men: Dark Phoenix for November 2 and the first entry will be the surprisingly toned The New Mutants this April 13.

The New Mutants cast are loaded with extremely talented individuals, Maisie Williams (Game of Thrones) as Rahne Sinclair/Wolfsbane, Charlie Heaton (Stranger Things) as Guthrie/Cannonball, Henry Zaga (13 Reasons Why) as Roberto da Costa/Sunspot, Blu Hunt (The Originals) as Danielle Moonstar/Mirage and Alice Braga (Queen of the South) as their mentor Dr. Cecilia Reyes.

Created by Chris Claremont and artist Bob McLeod the film is directed by Josh Boone (The Fault in Our Stars), the New Mutants follows a group of young mutants who are discovering their powers while trapped in a secret facility. After filming wrapped on The New Mutants, Fox chairman and CEO Stacey Snider compared the setting and tone of the film as “Breakfast Club detention/Cuckoo’s Nest institutional setting”, and described the film as “a haunted-house movie with a bunch of hormonal teenagers. We haven’t seen it as a superhero movie whose genre is more like “The Shining”. This movie may be the first to fall in the horror genre more so than any other X-Men features.
