Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi | 22 July 2016 (USA)

Starring: Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho, Anton Yelchin, Sofia Boutella, Idris Elba
Director: Justin Lin

Geek Facts:
-The series that introduced you to Spock, McCoy and of course Captain Kirk celebrates its 50th Anniversary in 2016.
-In both Star Trek (2009) and its sequel Star Trek Into Darkness (2013), Star Wars’ quirky droid R2-D2 makes a sneaky cameo. If you freeze frame Star Trek around 00:47:40 and 01:17:23 respectively, the little droid can be found amidst the debris.

While all eyes this week will be fixated in a galaxy far far away, today we have the latest preview from the final frontier. The third entry of the successfully rebooted franchise, ‘Star Trek Beyond’ (in no short thanks to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ director J.J. Abrams) takes the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise on its five-year mission to explore new worlds. New to the Star Trek director chair is Justin Lin, who is probably best known for his contribution to the Fast and Furious franchise (specifically Tokyo Drift through Fast 6). Another change to the creative team, is Simon Pegg pulling double duty. Pegg will not only be manning the engines as Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott but he’s also one of the writers on this film.

The core crew returns to the helm in this latest adventure, while rounding out the cast is newcomer Sofia Boutella who was last scene stealing in this year’s ‘Kingsman: The Secret Service’ and the always phenomenal actor Idris Elba. The trailer looks action-packed and filled with moment of humor but is it Trek enough?
