New In Theaters Review: Colombiana

Ay’ Cataleya! In the movie Colombiana, Zoe Saldana plays Cataleya, a girl from Columbia who becomes an assassin after her parents get killed and she has to flee to America. In the action packed thriller, Zoe plays an assassin bent on killing the mob Boss who had her parents killed, when she was a little girl. After escaping death on the day her parents get killed by the order of Colombian mobster, Don Luis (Beto Benites), Cataleya is determined to get her revenge. She travels to Chicago, where she is raised by her uncle Emilio Restrepo (Cliff Curtis) and her grandmother Mama (Ofelia Medina). Her uncle teaches her to become an assassin, after she asks that he do so, as a little girl. Behind his back she has been eliminating any one involved with Don’s organization since she started getting hit contracts from her uncle. Besides Don Luis, she also has targeted in her sights, Marco (Jordi Molla), his head of security who carries out his attacks against his enemies. Cataleya will not stop till she has killed everyone involved in her parents’ execution.

Zoe Saldana has been in a lot of big name movies over her film career, and now it’s her turn to break out on her own in this new femme fetal movie. Zoe has always been in my opinion a very good actress, and now I got to see her kick-ass and shoot people. This movie had a great story about a woman who was truly hurting inside after losing her parents in such a violent way. She took that anger out on the bad guys she took out of existence. The scenery in this movie was also very nice as it went from the slums of Colombia to the hoods of Chicago, with a little Miami thrown in there as well. Zoe did a great performance in this movie, and showed that she can hold her own in a starring action flick role. Her main nemesis was Marco played by Jordi Molla; you may remember him playing other bad guy roles in movies like Bad Boys 2 and Blow. He’s really good at playing the “seedy heartless” bad guy role. Cliff Curtis was also good as the uncle, who seemed like he had Chicago locked down, especially after one scene where he pulls out a gun and starts shooting in plain sight of everyone around him. That scene kind of had me laughing at how common that could have happened in some American hoods. It was done with no remorse for anyone involved.

Lennie James plays the cop who is trying to catch the killer of all these criminals. Michael Vartan plays the love interest of Zoe’s character. Everyone did a good job in this movie and it was well directed and shot. I gave this movie 2 ½ bullets out of 4, for its action and fast paced storyline along with great scenery. The movie runs 1hour and 45mins. It’s rated PG-13 for violence, disturbing images, intense sequences of action, sexuality, and brief strong language. Directed by Olivier Megaton and written by Robert Mark Kamen & Luc Besson. The film was produced by EuropaCorp, TF1 Films Productions, Grive Productions, Canal Plus, Ciné+. The movie was distributed by Sony Pictures Releasing.
