PNY makes a wide variety of storage solutions, such as thumb drives, SDXC flash cards. M.2 NVMes, and portable SSDs. They’ve around for a while now and can be found at most major retailers. Recently, they sent me their new PNY 1TB RP60 Portable SSD, a rugged, water resistant portable SSD featuring USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 Type-C and transfer speeds up to 2,000MB/s.

The PNY RP60 is about the size of a wallet. It’s lightweight and leads me to believe that it’s mostly made of plastic with a soft-touch silicone shell. There is a secure rubber cover for the USB-C port as well as a convenient clip loop built into the body. The unit itself is fairly portable and will fit in your pocket. All of this makes the PNY RP60 quite durable and resistant to water, dust, and drops. It’s IP65 rated and drop-resistant up to 3-meters.

I tested the PNY RP60 with file transfers. Specifically, 10gb worth of files. My regular 9-5 upgraded me to a Macbook Pro, and I had to transfer all my files over from one Macbook to another. While I didn’t attempt to measure the actual speed of writing 10gb worth of files to the drive and then writing it back to my new Macbook Pro, it did seem pretty fast. Transferring all the data to the drive only took a few minutes and the same was true about transferring back to the new Macbook Pro. It was a quick and painless transfer.

While I do like the performance and design of the PNY RP60, I’m not a big fan of the silicone shell. I know the reason why it’s used, but silicone, in general, is such a lint and dust magnet. I have to constantly clean it and it always looks so dirty. That’s my only real complaint about the PNY RP60.

FINAL THOUGHTS

While I’m not a fan of the silicone shell, I am a fan of the speeds and durability of the body. The PNY RP60 makes for a great backup drive, and while it’s not the smallest portable SSD I’ve seen, it is still very portable and pocketable. For me, I’m using it as a backup drive now for all my work-related files and documents and will just throw it in my bag since it’ll survive my commute to work each day.

The PNY 1TB RP60 Portable SSD is available now on Amazon.
