Everybody knows that when XMAS time comes around that gaming now more than ever is the number one thing every kid wants under the tree. Yes, the console is king and whether it’s a PS5, XBOX or Nintendo Switch you definitely want to get one of them and if you do you’re gonna need games. Games are what make the console and ecosystem of your favorite platform matter and as a writer, reviewer and gamer since the 80’s, I’ve played em all.
There are some undeniable games that every person who either gets a console or has consoles but wants some suggestions on what games to buy this holiday. I got you covered. This is the games that YOU should buy or ask for this holiday if you want to maximize your gaming experience.
ASTRO BOT
This year’s GOTY at the game awards is one of the best games to play that literally anybody can play and for Xmas day when you turn on that PS5 for first time. Astro Bot is a gorgeous game and a ton of fun. It also makes the best use of the Dual Sense controller. You’ll find out when you play it. This is an essential game to have if you’re picking up a PS5 or you already have one and let me mention again this is the GAME OF THE YEAR.
BLACK MYTH WUKONG
To some, Black Myth Wukong is the Game of the Year and whomever believes this is not at crazy in that thought. There is a reason that this game is critically acclaimed and broke sales records exceeding 20 million sold worldwide to date. Black Myth Wukong is like no other game available right now but keep in mind this game is NOT for everyone. It has a steep learning curve and requires patience and skill to play so if you’re going to buy this game. Consider this. One the best games this 2024 and one of the best games to pickup for yourself or someone this XMAS. Right now, you can only get it on PS5 and PC but XBOX will be getting this title in the future.
CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS 6
Arguably the best COD game that I’ve played since the COD franchise has been in existence and it’s all been done under the watch of Microsoft and XBOX. They took their time with this game. Let it cook and what we got was nothing short of incredible. The Zombies are back, multiplayer is still KING and the campaign is one of the best campaigns that I’ve ever played in COD and one of the best that you’ll play too. Here’s the best part. If you have an XBOX already then this game on Game Pass FREE. If you’re buying one for XMAS for yourself or someone else then make sure you get them a Game Pass subscription and tell them to download this game immediately.
LEGEND OF ZELDA: ECHOES OF WISDOM
Nintendo had an unusually quiet year for gaming but one thing that Nintendo will always get right and make a lot of fun is a Zelda game and once again they knocked it out of the park with LoZ: Echoes of Wisdom. In this game you finally get to play as Princess Zelda and in her own adventure. This game has a very old school feel reminiscent of Link to the Past (Which is the greatest Zelda game of all time, In my opinion). Don’t take my word for it though, watch the trailer, get you a Switch if you don’t already have one and play this game this Xmas. It’s a great game
ANY SPORTS OR SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT GAME FROM 2K GAMES
When it comes to wanting to play a game that is competitive, gorgeous, family driven and probably the best “stocking stuffer” type games. It gets no better than what 2K Games offers. They still are one of the best if not THE best at sports and sports entertainment style games which is my focus for XMAS game pickups. 2K makes other great games as well but on Xmas, there’s nothing like starting up an NBA 2K25 game, or a WWE 2K25 match, a TopSpin 2K25 match, so on and so forth with your friends and family members on XMAS Day. See where I’m going with this? Tons of replay value and just good fun, look at their lineup of some of their best this season.
INDIE GAMES ON EVERY PLATFORM
INDIE GAMES or Independent games should not be forgotten in fact, Indie games have probably had more impact in the gaming space in the past couple years than the big budget AAA games. I would argue this with anyone. There are more indie games available to play than your favorite big budget games not to mention that most of them you can buy at half the cost or less and they are often on sale. This means that for the holiday gaming season you can load up on a ton of indie games and experience what I think is by far the most artistic and innovative games available on the market.
