I’ve been around AV equipment most of my gaming and professional life – from using projectors in college dorms for SSBM tourneys to installing units in auditoriums; however, no one really considered projectors to be a viable option for true competitive gaming regarding response time and frame inputs. The BenQ X3100i Gaming Projector promises to elevate that experience, offering stunning 4K visuals, ultra-low input lag, and immersive audio. But does it deliver on all fronts, especially for those with limited space?
A Gamer’s Respite
Right out of the box, the BenQ X3100i presents itself as a premium piece of gaming tech. It’s a big boy with a modern touch – its white base, orange accent and black facing is reminiscent to something within the Portal universe, which I personally love. The 3300 ANSI lumens of brightness give it a sharp, vibrant output, making it perfect for a dedicated gaming room or even a home theater. However, if you’re in an apartment or a smaller space, the size might be a bit impractical. The projector is designed for those who can afford the room to let it breathe.

Despite its size, BenQ has made sure that the X3100i offers flexibility in installation. With a vertical lens shift of 40-60% and a throw ratio of 1.15-1.5, setting up the projector is surprisingly hassle-free. Whether you’re mounting it on the ceiling or placing it on a table, you can easily shift the image up and down without losing quality. in my case, I placed it on my coffee table, which is relatively low – but with its viewpoint, I was able to get stable and perfectly positioned angles. The 1.3x optical zoom further adds to the ease of installation, allowing you to project a massive 100” screen from just 2.5 meters away. It’s this kind of thoughtful design that makes the X3100i adaptable to a variety of spaces.
4K HDR That Delivers
The real star of the show with the X3100i is its visual performance. Boasting 4K UHD resolution (3840 x 2160) and High Dynamic Range (HDR), this projector delivers a level of detail that’s hard to beat. Whether you’re diving into the vast landscapes of an open-world game or watching your favorite movies, the X3100i ensures you’re seeing every nuance. The colors are rich, the contrasts are deep, and the overall picture quality is nothing short of stunning – it can compete with the likes of LG G1 with perfect room lighting. The enhanced contrast and true-to-life colors bring game worlds to life in a way that few projectors can match. It’s not just about the resolution; it’s about how the X3100i leverages its 4K HDR capabilities to immerse you completely. The detail is meticulous, making every in-game moment feel heart-pounding and awe-inspiring.
However, while the X3100i excels in many areas, it’s not without its flaws. Motion handling can be a bit of an issue, particularly during fast-paced gaming sessions. There are instances where motion appears slightly distorted, which can be distracting when precision is key. It’s a minor hiccup in an otherwise excellent visual performance, but for competitive gamers, it’s worth noting.

The BenQ X3100i is designed with players in mind. One of its standout features is the ultra-fast 4.16ms low input lag in Game modes – not the ABSOLUTE lowest, but for what it’s providing, it’s very feasible. This ensures that your actions translate almost instantly on the screen, giving you a bit of a competitive edge in fast-paced games where every millisecond counts. Adding to its gaming prowess is the Auto Game Mode, which automatically identifies inputs from Xbox, PlayStation, and Switch consoles. This feature is a game-changer, as it recalls your previous game mode settings without you having to manually adjust anything. A rather thoughtful feature I might add. Another nifty feature is the FPS Crosshair. If you’re into first-person shooters, this feature projects a targeting reticle onto the screen, helping you lock onto adversaries with greater accuracy. Not aim assist, but it can help keep track of your overall positioning – gone are the days where you placed an electric tape centered of your screen. No? Was I the only one doing that? OK…. anyway, while the input lag is impressively low, the occasional motion distortion might be a deal-breaker for those who demand flawless performance in every frame.
BenQ didn’t just focus on visuals with the X3100i; they’ve put significant effort into crafting a compelling audio experience as well. The projector features BenQ’s CinematicSound technology, which is powered by Bongiovi DPS. This technology dynamically enhances the audio, creating a 3D soundscape that adds depth and distance to the gaming experience. Doesn’t matter if you’re in the middle of an explosive firefight or a quiet, tension-filled stealth mission, the audio placement is precise. Every sound feels like it’s coming from the right direction, adding another layer of immersion to your gaming sessions. The bass is deep, the mids are clear, and the highs are sharp, making sure you don’t miss a beat.
Tailored for the Elite
However, as good as the audio is, it’s still a projector, and for the best experience, pairing it with a dedicated sound system or a high-quality gaming headset would be ideal. The built-in speakers do a decent job, but they might not fully satisfy audiophiles or those used to more robust audio setups. While the BenQ X3100i is marketed as a gaming projector, its versatility extends beyond just playing games. The 4K HDR visuals and CinematicSound technology make it an excellent choice for movie nights, streaming, and other forms of entertainment.

The X3100i also supports multiple connectivity options, including HDMI, USB, Wireless LAN, and Bluetooth. This makes it easy to connect various devices, whether you’re streaming content, gaming on a console, or even using it for presentations. The ease of use and flexibility in connectivity options make the X3100i a solid all-around projector, even if gaming is your primary focus. BenQ has designed the X3100i with longevity in mind. The projector offers an impressive 20,000-hour lifespan in Normal Mode and up to 30,000 hours in Economy Mode. This means you can game, stream, and watch movies for years without worrying about the projector’s lifespan. The efficiency is another plus, as it consumes less power compared to older models, making it a more sustainable option for long-term use.
REVIEW SCORE: 8.5/10
The BenQ X3100i delivers on its promise of stunning visuals and immersive audio, making it a top choice for gamers who want to take their setup to the next level. While it’s not without its flaws, the overall performance and feature set make it a worthy investment for those who prioritize quality and immersion. I highly recommend this, especially to those that want an adjustable size for their competitive nature.
