Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost

Walking is healthy for most people, but not everyone wants to walk, especially if they have to walk very long distances. One way to get where you need to go quicker is with an electric scooter. One of the more popular electric scooter options is the Swagtraon Swagger 5 Boost. This electric scooter features a power 300W motor, no-flat tires, foldable design, and up to 11 miles of range per charge.

DESIGN

Don’t think the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost is like a kids scooter. It’s far from it. This is a large electric scooter that is bigger than anything a little kid might ride. This thing is made for adults and older children and because of that, you won’t look out of place riding it. The version we have here is covered in matte black colorway but it can also be had in matte silver. I like the black though and it gives the scooter a stealth look.

Most of the scooter is made of solid metal, except for the front and rear fenders, and various little bits here and there. This is a really well-built scooter that feels like it can handle a lot of weight and won’t buckle under load. The base is very solid, long, and wide, which provides a sturdy place for your feet to rest.

Up top where the handles are, there is a digital readout for speed and power as well as a button to regulate top speed. There’s a really beefy disk brake in the back and the slightest squeeze of the brake handle will have you stopping on a dime. There’s also a brake light for safety to let others know what you’re doing as well as a built-in LED light up front for nighttime use.

I like that the cables used for the brake and power are all routed inside the body for the most part so they aren’t exposed where they might get damaged accidentally. There’s also a handy kickstand when you need to park your scooter.

FEATURES AND SPECS

The Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost actually has some pretty good specs. It has a larger 300W motor, opposed to the 250W motor in the older one, which is good for a healthy 18 MPH top speed. To keep things safe, Swagtron provides three different speed modes that limit the top speed. These can be changed with a simple press of a button and limits the speed to 5 MPH, 11 MPH, and 18 MPH. This is perfect for instance if you want to limit the speed for a child or if you’re riding in a densely populated area.

To keep you powered all day, the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost has a lithium battery that can last up to 11 miles per charge, but if you happen to need more juice, you can get a full charge in about 3.5 hours. The 11-mile range is pretty far though. Note that the motor isn’t the only thing the battery is powering as there is also a built-in LED headlight, taillight, and brake lights, as well as a built-in display that shows speed and range.

Other thoughtful features include the “no-flat” tires which have a honeycomb design making the tires maintenance-free and puncture-proof. The large 8.5″ tires make for a smooth ride that helps absorb a lot of little bumps. The scooter can handle a maximum load of 320 lbs, which makes this ideal for both older children (12+) and adults.

Lastly, you can fold the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost if you need to store it or make it easier to carry. All you need to do is rotate a little locking ring and flip the lever fold the handle down. This makes it easy to transport if you need to carry it around in places that won’t allow you to ride. I should mention that the scooter does weigh 26 lbs, so while it’s not that heavy, it’s also not very light.

EXPERIENCE

Setup of the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost is very easy. Most of it comes assembled and all you really need to do is attach the brake handle and the two handlebars. These screws into place and the brake one just needs to be tightened with a screw. After that, just charge it up with the included charging cable. It should only take a few hours to charge. Once that’s done, you’re pretty much ready to go.

There is a smart app you can download, though it’s not necessary to use it to get the most out of the scooter. Pretty much everything can be set on the built-in digital display. The only thing you would need the app for is to set whether or not you want to turn on cruise control mode and if you want the accelerator to only come on after the scooter starts moving.

Speed settings can be adjusted on the digital display with three different settings. Pressing the button while it’s on will show 1, 2, or 3. The higher the number, the faster the top speed. I would probably start out at either 1 or 2 until you get used to how fast this thing accelerates as well as getting used to the brake which is a little too good. A light tap on the brake handle will stop this thing on a dime so you need to learn how to decelerate first and then kind of feather the brake.

Once you get the hang of that and learn how to safely maneuver, you can kick up the speed. And let me tell you, the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost really hauls. Acceleration is quick with the scooter almost wanting to kick out from under you and going top speed is scary fast. Setting 3 for top speed should really only be used if you have plenty of open space where you won’t run the risk of hitting others. Nothing is worse than a high-speed crash. I’d also suggest wearing at least a helmet just in case. Anyways, this is one fast scooter and will definitely get you to where you need to go in style.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Electric scooters are great for city living. Let’s say you need to travel several blocks to work, but you don’t want to drive because parking is a hassle. You also don’t want to walk because it’s kind of far and you don’t want to get all sweaty. What do you do? If you’re lucky enough to live in a city where you can rent an electric scooter, then great. But not everyone is so lucky. I myself would rather own my own electric scooter and the Swagtron Swagger 5 Boost has been amazing so far. This is a really simple electric scooter to operate and has all the features you’d ever want in one.
