Out of all of the DC movies slated over the next few years, this is the one I’m looking forward to next. Making his first appearance in Whiz Comics #2, Captain Marvel, a.k.a. Shazam has been around almost as long as Batman. While the movie’s story is reportedly based on the New 52 reboot of the character, written by former DC Films co-chief Geoff Johns (who also co-wrote the new Wonder Woman), it also stars Levi as the titular hero. Asher Angel as Billy Batson and Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana – Shazam’s mad scientist arch-enemy from the comics, seeking revenge on the world that mocks him. On a geek note, the core cast are all former comic movie alumni. Mark Strong played Sinestro in “Green Lantern”, Djimon Hounsou was Korath in the first “Guardians of the Galaxy” (and coincidently Marvel’s Captain Marvel) and Zachery Levi was Fandral in “Thor: The Dark World”. If Billy Batson’s bud Freddy (Jack Dylan Grazer) looks familiar, he was recently seen playing Eddie Kaspbrak in “It: Chapter one”.

The film is directed by David F. Sandberg who recently found success with “Annabelle: Creation”. If you’re a horror fan, I highly recommend you check out his film short “light’s out” (with the light’s out). While the “Worlds of DC” (formally DCEU) movies of recent carry with it a serious tone, the character of Shazam will be lighthearted by comparison.

Here’s the official synopsis:
We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Strong).
