The Crimes of Grindelwald is the second of five planned chapters in the Fantastic Beast film series. Taking place several decades before Dumbledore met The Boy Who Lived (a.k.a. Harry Potter), Newt Scamander has finally finished his textbook on magical creatures. At the end of the first film, Grindelwald was remanded into the custody of MACUSE (Magical Congress of the United States of America). Making good on his threat, Grindelwald has escaped. While Newt prepares to go on a world tour to promote his achievement, his former Hogwarts professor Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) is in need of help, taking this adventure in a much darker direction.

In this week’s Entertainment Weekly Magazine, Eddie Redmayne reports that this chapter is more of a thriller.
“It’s darker and more rigorous and weaving in the Potter lore we’re much more familiar with. So these characters you met in the first film are now in the wizarding world you understand more thoroughly. When I read [the script] it had these cryptic elements to it and it played like a thriller that made it a page-turner.”
