Samsung GALAXY ROUND makes curved displays a reality

Samsung Galaxy Round hands on (3)

Well this was announced quicker then we may have expected. With the Samsung Galaxy Note 3 and Samsung Galaxy Gear just announced last month. Samsung Korea has revealed a new device to their Galaxy family titled “GALAXY ROUND”. We wondered, rumored, and asked about it and its LIVE and out in the open. By introducing a whole new medium of mobile display comes along some new features catered just to this device.

Roll Bounce: With the Galaxy Round laying on its back and screen off if you tilt the screen you will be able to see notifications, also with date and date. (video demoing this below)

Gravity Effect: Providing visual interaction while tilting the screen

BounceUX: While music is playing, pressing the screen the left or right controls the music, while going through your galleries of photos a tilt either direction will let you slide pass those precious moments.

As far as specs concerned it will be 5.7-inches, 7.9mm thick, weighs 154g, 3GB RAM, 32GB memory, 2800mAh battery, 13MP camera, and a 2.3 Quad core processor running Android Jelly Bean 4.3.

It sounded crazy on paper and even seeing the prerendered shots of the phone I didn’t think it would come out that great, but it does peak interest. The added curve isn’t too off setting and maybe of some use. It’s really a glorified Samsung Galaxy Note 3 curved it based on the specs. It will be interesting to see if Samsung decides to bring this to other markets especially the U.S. and if we will embrace or pan it here. It is available now in Korea only.

If the Samsung GALAXY Round comes to market in the United States would you rush to pick one up?

Press Release:

Samsung has been a mobile display innovator by introducing color TFT-LCD, AMOLED, and Super AMOLED flexible display for its mobile product. With this pioneering curved display technology, GALAXY ROUND blends the latest smartphone screen innovations with unique design features. The sleek and thin Samsung GALAXY ROUND which equipped with a 5.7” Full HD Super AMOLED with 7.9mm thick and weighs 154g offers a comfortable hand grip feeling to user, and exclusive experiences of curved display.

As a result of its unique curved design, users can take advantage of round integration experiences like the Roll Effect that enables user to check information such as date, time, missed call and battery easily when home screen is off, and the GravityEffect for creating visual interaction with the screen by tilting the device. For music, the Bounce UX enables users to control their music. When the GALAXY ROUND’s display is off while the music player is running, a short press to the left of the device will play the previous track while a short press to the right will play the next track. For pictures and videos, the Side Mirror feature enables users to gain access to list of the album content with a left and right tilt.

The large screen size of the GALAXY ROUND provides additional benefits to users. Useful One-Hand Operation features bring a user’s most desired controls closer to a preferred side of the screen. The device enables enhanced multitasking capabilities that allow users to fully utilize the larger screen through Multi Window, a feature that enables users to open more than one application on the screen, run simultaneous multiple instances of the same application or to easily share content between applications.
