Let’s be clear here. G Style is about which consumer electronics has style, is cool and is the best. That being said, we feel it is never cool to bully your way to the top. You see people Blu Ray and HD-DVD are pretty much identical when it comes to great picture and sound, however this format war doesn’t seem like it is being picked by the consumers. This format wars has be plague with supposed back room deals between studios and the formats, stores picking which one it will carry over another, and in essence telling the consumer what they should be buying instead of the consumer deciding for themselves.
It seem Netflix and Best Buy have decided to join the bandwagon. Best Buy has announced it will officially promote Blu-ray as the HD format of the future. Starting in early March the store will showcase Blu Ray hardware and movies on it shelves and website, and switch from being neutral, to recommending Blu-ray to any customers that ask. at the same time Netflix has announced that it will no longer buy new HD-DVD movies for renting and that it will phase out the format when it’s current stock of HD-DVD disc reach their end of life cycle. Stuff like this just doesn’t have G Style approval, why you ask? Not because we as a magazine choose one side over the other, but when department and rental stores who job is just to put the product out there and let the consumer decide what they want to buy or rent start to decide who they are going for in the format war which limits the consumer’s ability to choose themselves, that is just uncool!
