Korg Unveils the Powerful, Affordable KROSS Keyboard, its First Battery-Powered, Portable Keyboard with Workstation Features

New keyboard offers workstation features such as a wide variety of rich and unique sounds and effects, a MIDI sequencer and audio recording, plus powerful aesthetic appeal

Musikmesse, Frankfurt, Germany, April 10th, 2013 – Korg announces the new KROSS keyboard. Kross is a mobile, affordable, keyboard workstation with audio/MIDI recording capabilities, AC or battery operation (6xAA), and a vast selection of cutting-edge sounds. Available with 61 keys or 88 fully weighted keys, it’s the first battery-powered, full-featured Korg keyboard workstation. With rich sounds that are top of its class, and practical features such as analog-style step sequencing and built-in audio recorder, all in a lightweight and portable package, Kross offers specs and style that will exceed people’s expectation of a keyboard at this price point.

The piano, electric piano, and drum sounds have been taken from some of Korg’s flagship instruments, offering a set of sounds that surpasses other instruments in its class. The grand piano features intricately sampled decays with three levels of velocity, and also reproduces the noises made by the damper pedal. The five classic electric piano sounds include effect settings. In addition, careful attention has been paid to the drum sounds for song creation.

Kross contains approximately twice as much sound sample data as preceding Korg models such as the X50 and the PS60. Essential sounds like rock/jazz organ, strings, brass, and synth sounds have all been upgraded and enhanced. Also included are instruments such as toy piano, accordion, combo organ, church organ, and even vintage instruments such as a tape sampler. Unique to a keyboard of its class are sounds for today’s EDM dance music and electronica.

Effect types include delay, reverb, chorus, flanger, and rotary speaker, as well as Korg’s proprietary amp modeling, and even a vocoder. In total, 134 high-quality effects are available (seven simultaneous).

Kross includes a full-featured, 16-track MIDI sequencer as well as an analog-style step sequencer. The easy-to-use sequencer design features sixteen buttons that are used to turn individual notes on or off for quickly and easily creating original rhythm patterns. SMF-format data can easily be exchanged with a computer via an optional SC card. A full set of workstation and production tools include a stereo audio recorder with overdubbing capabilities, a one-touch Drum Track function, and an arpeggiator to animate any type of sound.

The Kross’ unmistakable color and design project a powerful and unique aesthetic appeal. The top panel is a sleek black color, while the rear and side panels feature a bold red color scheme. The 61-key model, with its distinctive carrying handle, is amazingly light; at only 4.3 kg/9.5 lb, it’s the most portable in its category. The 88-key model packs a piano-touch hammer action keyboard into a mere 12.4 kg/27.3 lbs. Both models can operate on an AC adapter or on six AA alkaline or nickel-metal hydride batteries.

The Korg Kross keyboard workstation will be available in August 2013 with U.S. Street prices as follows: 61-key: $699 and 88-key: $999.

Additional product information is available at Korg.com

Korg is exhibiting at Halle 3.0 booth B62 at the 2013 Musikmesse Show in Frankfurt, Germany

When it comes to Bluetooth speakers, there are certainly a ton of choices out there. The problem is, which one is right for you and which ones sound the best. Well, it’s not as cut and dry as that. You see, although one speaker might sound really good, it may lack the features you want or it could be a speaker with all the features you want, but sound really lousy. It’s one of those buying decisions that you should really research since there are so many out there. I’ve been lucky enough to try a few and even though they all have their pros and cons, the major pro of course is that they are all Bluetooth enabled which means any Bluetooth equipped device can connect to them and make use of them as a wireless speaker.

That brings me to the Braven 570. It’s the latest Bluetooth speaker I’m looking at right now that boasts superior sound with unparalleled style.

Design and Build

The Bravia 570 sticks to the familiar rectangular shape that we see with many portable Bluetooth speakers. The difference of course is with the aesthetics as most companies do something to differentiate the look of their devices. With the Braven 570, they choose to keep the design simple and clean with very little distractions. It’s more of a functional design but still looks quite stylish, in a minimalistic kind of way.

The otter shell is made from an impact resistant polymer that will withstand drops and bumps. Braven sent me the metallic blue version of the 570 and at first, I mistook it for an anodized aluminum. The finish of the metallic blue is superb and really does give off that aluminum vibe. Again, it isn’t. This of course has its advantages. The 570 is incredibly lightweight and unlike aluminum which when dropped, will become dented and distorted, the polymer shell of the Braven 570 will not do that. On the front and back of the main body, you’ll find a series of speaker holes precision drilled into the body which gives it a very industrial look. You’ll notice that it seems like there are no buttons at all on it as you don’t seen any up top. Instead, Braven has placed all the buttons and ports on the side of the 570.

The sides of the Braven 570 are black and overall plain looking compared to the rest of the body. On one side, you’ll find the on/off switch, micro-USB charging port, audio-in jack, volume buttons, and the speakerphone button. On the other side, you’ll find the battery check light, an audio line-out jack, and a USB port to charge devices. Yes, that’s right, you can use the the Braven 570 as a portable battery charger if need be.

Usage

Like most other Bluetooth speakers, this one syncs up easily with your Bluetooth equipped mobile devices. Once connected, the Braven 570 will intercept all audio signals coming from your device, not just music. Getting started with the basics, the Braven 570 has its own volume controls. That means you can use it to set the maximum volume you want it at and then use your mobile device to adjust the volume through software. You have more control over the volume this way as opposed to a speaker that doesn’t have its own volume controls.

The main feature however that you want from a speaker is great audio quality. I can say from my time using the Braven 570 is that this is one of the best sounding Bluetooth speakers I’ve used. The sound is crisp and clear and doesn’t distort, even at its most maximum volume. It has no problems filling an entire room with sound or even several depending on the layout of your place. Treble is nice and high while the bass isn’t quite as thumpy as some might like. It doesn’t get too low in the bass, but it’s enough in my opinion for most songs out there.

If you think the Braven 570 isn’t quite loud enough or cover enough area, you can daisy chain another speaker to it using the audio line-out port. This is a feature I’ve only seen on a couple other speakers. What this means too is that it is possible to use the Braven 570 as a Bluetooth receiver for much larger speakers you may have. It’s possible to hook it up to an audio receiver you may have and in essence, turning that into a wireless unit. It’s a pretty neat feature and a handy one to have.

Another handy feature that again, I’ve only seen on a select few portable speakers is the ability to use it as a battery backup unit. Just plug in your devices charging cable into the USB charge port and your device will start recharging. Obviously you’re limited to what is left on the battery after you’ve been using it to listen to your music, but it’s useful in a pinch if you need a quick boost.

Last but not least, the Braven 570 works as a speakerphone. It’s not necessary to have this feature, but it’s always nice when it’s included. Since the 570 has a built in mic, you can directly at it and it will pick up your voice. The person you are talking to on the other side also sounds loud and clear. This is perfect for those who conduct business on their mobile devices but want a hands free method of talking with clients.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I find the Braven 570 a very satisfying Bluetooth speaker. I like the fact that it is very lightweight making it easy to carry around when needed. It has pretty much has all the features I’d want in a Bluetooth speaker<del> though it would have been nice if it has play controls on it. This was the only thing about it I wish it had just so I could control my music without having to dig my phone out if I wanted to switch tracks.</del> (Update: Scratch all that I just said about it not having playback controls. It’s not labeled all that clearly on the device, but you can in fact control playback with it. All you have to do is hold down the + volume button to advance a track or the – volume button to go back a track.)

<del>Other than that, it’s a great sounding speaker that’s versatile, well made, and a joy to use.</del> (Update: Now that I know that the Braven 570 can in fact control playback using the volume buttons on the unit, that now means that the Braven 570 is the perfect speaker in my opinion. It does everything you want a speaker of this type to do. It plays your music, allows you to control both playback and volume, and it can function as a speakerphone. It’s light, very well made, and serves multiple functions. This is definitely one of the best Bluetooth speakers I’ve used.)

PRESS RELEASE:

                                Novation Bass Station II
The classic Novation Bass Station analogue synth reworked for the 21st century

To celebrate its 21st birthday, Novation is proud to announce the launch of Bass Station II – a powerful analogue synth that’s made for bass but equally well adapted to leads. Based on the classic Novation Bass Station from 20 years ago, Bass Station II has been completely re-worked for the 21st Century, with two filters, two oscillators plus a sub-oscillator, patch save and a fully-analogue effects section. Plus there’s a step- sequencer, arpeggiator, a two octave (25-note) velocity-sensitive keyboard with full-sized keys and a powerful modulation section. There’s even MIDI I/O and USB connectivity.

Key Features:

Analogue synth: brand new version of the classic Bass Station: Bass Station II has a pure analogue audio signal path, reviving the spirit of the original Bass Station with an all-new design optimised for bass.

Two distinct analogue filters: In addition to the original “Classic” Bass Station filter, there’s a brand new “Acid” diode ladder filter for squelchy 303-esque bass sounds.

Load and save patches: 64 factory patches on-board with room for 64 more of your own: save more to your computer via USB.

Pattern-based Step Sequencer and Arpeggiator: Bass Station II has an arpeggiator with a programmable step sequencer that enables you to store and call up patterns as well as quickly sketch out ideas.

Instant hands-on control: Instant hands-on control of the sound engine via a traditional analogue synth control panel.

Two oscillators plus an additional sub oscillator: Bass Station II has two sync-able, tune-able oscillators with four selectable waveforms, plus a third sub-oscillator for generating enormous bass sounds.

Analogue effects section: Bass Station II includes fully analogue distortion and filter-modulation effects and a separate filter overdrive to add aggression and crunch.

Powerful modulation section featuring two envelopes and two LFOs: Two ADSR envelopes for amp, filter, pitch and pulse width modulation alongside two LFOs with waveforms including triangle, sawtooth, square and sample & hold.

Bass Station II

Twenty years ago, Novation released the ground-breaking Bass Station: a compact, analogue synth designed for fat bass sounds and bubbly leads. The original Bass Station became a classic; now we present the new Bass Station II: an analogue monophonic synth but with a total re-design that brings it firmly into the 21st century, bigger and bolder than ever. It’s more than a bass synth; it’s versatile enough to kick out sharp leads and crisp arpeggios.

Bass Station II’s signal path is all analogue, including the effects section. It is based on three analogue oscillators (two independent oscillators plus a sub for rich bass sounds) and a noise generator; two discrete filters, Classic and Acid, with built-in overdrive; distortion and osc filter mod effects; two ADSR envelopes, two LFOs, and an arpeggiator and programmable step sequencer. And that’s just scratching the surface of the synth engine. Bass Station II’s traditional control layout breaks everything into modules with dedicated pots, switches and sliders. Unlike a traditional analogue synth, there’s plenty of storage for your own sounds – there are 64 factory presets plus 64 more slots for your own sounds in the hardware – and you can store more on your computer.

About Bass Station II’s design

The original Bass Station was released in 1993, but its heritage goes back a lot further: to the 1970s, thought of by many as the golden era of synthesis. Synth designer Chris Huggett has remained a constant design force for Novation over the years. Huggett has decades of experience in hardware synth design, having pioneered the development of digitally controlled analogue synths including the OSCar. He also designed such classics as the Wasp, released by Electronic Dream Plant in 1978 – and there is a direct line of descent from the Wasp filter to the awesome “Classic” filter in Bass Station II.

Availability: worldwide in June 2013.
Pricing information: $629.99 MSRP / $499.99 at dealers

It’s been a long time since I sat in a makeshift, DIY sound proofed (egg cartons) sound booth to sing a song. I do remember just how important it was to be able to “hear” myself as well as the music I was singing to. I liked the isolation of my voice it help me better arrange during final mastering. I grew up watching countless musicians use earphones, called monitors, to accurately hear their music on stage. I-Mego created ZTONE (pronounced: stone) to bring this on-stage earphone quality to your everyday life. Do the ZTONE’s bring that “back in the studio” feel? I’ve actually used these as my daily go to earphones for the last 60 days and was actually impressed.

Design/Build

ZTONE utilizes a patent-pending design that form-fits and locks in your ear. ZTONE also provides a secure, comfortable fit through four pairs of custom-molded ear gels. The braided cables made from genuine silver carry impeccable audio to the studio-tuned monitors and securely fit behind your ear and add a touch of elegance to the design. ZTONE completes the package with an elegant design that compliments both your taste in music and your style.

It took some maneuvering with the custom molded ear gels to actually get the full benefit of the lock feature. Once I got it sorted out it I found them to be a lot more comfortable than they look. While they all have the silver braided cable they are available in 3 different colored finishes Gold, Gunmetal and Chrome.

Final Thoughts

Some headphones serve a particular purpose and are not all one size fits all or even most. I found that to especially be the case with the I-Mego Ztones. These are really made for a DJ/hardcore music person, so casual listeners or even most general consumers may want steer clear. These aren’t bass heavy, no inline mic or as there is no inline mic or volume controls and it can take a bit of effort to get them adjusted just right for optimal performance.

For me – I use these daily with my iPod and find I enjoy albums like Adele – 21 much more with them. I didn’t miss the enhanced bass I’ve gotten used to with most other earphones I’ve used. For my personal use they are well worth the $99.99 price tag and for anyone else who is in the market for a great pair of monitors to listen to tracks, demos, rough mixes; etc. I’d highly recommend. If you plan on listening to bass heavy and you require that option with your earphones these won’t do the trick.

The no.1 Live controller: now brighter, faster and universal

Launchpad S is an update to the best-selling grid controller for Ableton Live: the Novation Launchpad. The 64 tri-colour pads can launch loops and clips, trigger drums and samples, and also control effects, volumes, mutes, solos and more.

Launchpad S is an evolution of the ubiquitous Launchpad, the Ableton Live controller that re-defined the way we perform music with computers. A grid of 64 ‘launch’ pads allows hands-on control of music software such as Ableton Live and FL Studio. It is especially designed for launching loops/clips and triggering effects as well as getting full mixer control including volume, effects sends, pan, mute, solo and track arm. The grid can also trigger drums and one-shot samples. A second user mode allows users to freely assign pads to control other software parameters.

KEY FEATURES

64-button music software controller Launch loops/clips, trigger drums and samples, and control effects and volumes.

Brighter, faster and works with more software Launchpad S is an update to the best-selling original Launchpad.

Cutting cords but need sound on the go? Check out what we thought of the Sony Portable (Bluetooth) Wireless Speaker - SRS-BTV5 in our G Style Review.

After having a tour of Sony’s various products back at CES 2013 earlier this year in Las Vegas, I felt I needed some of a hands on approach with many of the devices. One of those was the SRS-BTV5 (wireless speaker) which actually doesn’t even have an official name.

You can call it the Sony Bluetooth Wireless speaker or others I have seen such as the Sony Sphere and Sony’s Ball of Sound. That last title would have actually been pretty catchy. But besides that does this little sound ball catch your ears? At $69.99 is it worth the price tag?

Sony Bluetooth Wireless Speaker – Style

The speaker comes in the shape of a little ball. I’m reviewing the black model, but there is also white and I have seen Pink and Blue at CES which I imagine will be released later. With it being 2.6 in diameter, 2.8 inches tall and weighing just under 5 ounces you could much toss it in anything without noticing any weight. I have thrown it in my bag, even times put it in my winter jacket. It has a great build quality as I see with Sony products and doesn’t feel cheaply put together.

There isn’t a crazy amount of buttons on the speaker with your volume controls on the left side and mic controls on the right side. The back has a pull out compartment for charging via a microUSB cable and an audio in jack. On the bottom is controls for Pairing and turning off the NFC.

The fact that it’s so small it can be placed just about anywhere whether it be a nightstand, desktop, and blends in without being noticed.

Included with the Sony Bluetooth Wireless Speaker is a micro USB cable mesh carrying pouch to drop your ball in.

Features

Sony Portable Wireless Speaker – SRS-BTV5

Sony touted NFC as a big feature that they would be putting into a lot of its products going forward. Turning on the speaker sets it up to be NFC prepared for pairing. I did try to do it a few times with the Samsung Galaxy Note II and it wouldn’t take right away but using the Samsung Galaxy S III, it paired with ease. Syncing it up via bluetooth with NFC-less devices such as the HTC One S provided instant connection.

As far as battery life was concerned I was able to get about 4-5 hours of constant music blaring through it before needed a charge. I actually fell sleep and woke up and it was still playing.

Sound

Now first off, if you’re expecting earth-shaking tunes coming from this little speaker you may have to rethink how you think music is broadcast. It is one little speaker that has just one driver built-in. Compared to the Jambox that has two or the Beats Pill has 4 times that. While you can get a decent amount of sound out of it, at times I wish I could jack the sound like even more but there was limitations.

If you’re looking to be the life of the party with this speaker, you may get booed. But as far as the life of the office you might be an office setting. I think it works best doubling as either a portable speaker for your smart phone and/or being a laptop/desktop speaker.

Is the Sony SRS-BTV5 Worth the Price Tag?

The most attractive feature about the Sony SRS-BTV5 has to be the design and portability. The sound isn’t the best in the world but once again it isn’t the worst either. Providing it with a powerful speaker could have definitely made it a winner. If you’re sitting at your office desk and want to sync up some tunes from your phone while you do work then its good for you. Trying to do anything further may not provide satisfaction. At $69.99 you’re paying for the various connectivity options and portability. Is it worth that much to you?

This is the second Scosche Bluetooth speaker that I’m taking a look at now and this one is the full sized BoomSTREAM. It’s very similar to the BoomSTREAM Mini in ease of use and ability to stream audio from your Bluetooth equipped mobile device. That doesn’t mean it’s just a larger version of the BoomSTEAM Mini however as it does have couple unique tricks up its sleeve that the mini version lacks. Not only is the BoomSTREAM a Bluetooth speaker and a speakerphone, but it’s also a portable battery charger.

Design and Build

The first thing you’ll notice about the BoomSTREAM is the size. It’s much larger than the BoomSTREAM Mini and roughly the same size as something like the Jawbone Jambox or the NUU Splash that I looked at a few weeks back. It isn’t that heavy though which makes it quite portable if you need a little bit more oomph than a tiny speaker can give you.

The unit I received is a black on black unit which I believe is the only color available for the full sized BoomSTREAM. It’s got a real nice stealth look to it and the black doesn’t make it overly flashy. The basic black gives it that classic look which would make it look at home with any decor.

It has a basic pill shape to it which I’ve seen with other speakers so it’s nothing radically different. The top is brushed aluminum that looks pretty slick in black. Up here, you’ll also find 3 buttons that are worth mentioning. There is the Bluetooth button and the two volume buttons. What that means is that sadly, it doesn’t have media control buttons which allow for skipping of tracks. What you can do though with the Bluetooth labeled button is pause tracks and resume them again which is better than nothing at all.

On the main body of the BoomSTREAM, most of it is covered in some kind of cloth which hides the speakers underneath. Behind the sloth is solid however so it’s not something you can easily poke through and rip. It does give the whole unit an old school box speaker look to it which is kind of nice. On the main body, on one side you’ll find the power switch, aux-in jack, and the USB charging port for the speaker. The aux-in jack is used for devices that do not have Bluetooth such as older MP3 players. With the supplied audio jack, you can use these with the BoomSTREAM. It also includes the USB charging cable.

On the other side of the body, you’ll find another USB port, but a full sized one. This one serves a rather unique function. It allows you to use the remaining available battery power from the BoomSTREAM and use it to charge something like your iPhone or any other mobile device that allows for USB charging. It’s a pretty cool bonus feature that I can see coming in handy, especially if you’re going to playing a lot of music on the go.

On the bottom of the unit, you’ll find that it is almost entirely rubberized with 4 extended rubber feet for grip. At the center, you’ll find a metal speaker grill which is where the down firing passive sub woofer is placed. This is also why their are rubber feet that lift the unit up a bit. That means in total, there are two 40mm speaker drivers and 1 passive sub woofer delivering crisp, clean audio.

Usage

Like with most Bluetooth devices, pairing the speaker to your phone is easy. Just turn your Bluetooth on on your mobile device and then turn on the speaker. It should automatically show up in your list of available Bluetooth devices. Just click on it and it will automatically pair. Like with most Bluetooth devices, after it’s paired, it will save those settings and automatically connect every time you turn on the speaker.

When you play music on the BoomSTREAM, you’ll mainly only be able to adjust volume on it or pause/play tracks. Tap the volume buttons to increase/decrease volume in steps or hold it down to quickly change volume to their extremes. Speaking of volume, this thing gets really loud if turned all the way up. Luckily, when turned off, it resets the volume back down to mid levels so that the next time you use it, you won’t get a big surprise if the volume was places too high.

Like I stated above, the BoomSTREAM also works as a speakerphone. When a call comes in, all you have to do is press the Bluetooth button and it will pick up the call. Just speak into it like you would normally do a regular speakerphone and it will pick up your voice. Voice from your caller will be heard from the speakers.

Now, the one thing I found really surprising is that I could actually control Siri with the BoomSTREAM. Al I had to do was hold down the Bluetooth button a bit and it would activate Siri. Since the BoomSTREAM has a mic built in, I could just speak into it to give Siri commands. It was a surprising feature and one that I accidentally happened upon while playing with it. I don’t even think it’s an advertised feature.

Final Thoughts

As with the BoomSTREAM Mini, I really like the full sized BoomSTREAM. Yes I love that it can stream all my audio from apps as well as music and video, but that it also functions as a speakerphone. Not only that, it can activate Siri which was a surprise feature that wasn’t listed and it can function as a backup phone charger in an emergency. Just make sure you have your charging cable on you or you can’t use this feature.

The construction of the BoomSTREAM is also pretty nice, though there is a bit more plastic than I’d like. Even still, since it’s all black, the plastic bits aren’t as noticeable. The most important thing though is that the BoomSTREAM sounds pretty good. It has a nice even tone. The treble isn’t too high and the bass isn’t too low. It’s just perfect enough where you get a good range all throughout.

Overall, Scosche has a great product here with the BoomSTREAM. It’s also quite affordable when compared to the more expensive alternatives out there.

It can be argued that Beat By Dre headphones are the best you can buy for your money, however there are lots of people who find this statement to be false. In fact, there would be several members of our team here who will never even touch a Beats By Dre headphone, yours truly included. With that said, Wicked Audio did a little impromptu street test with thier Wicked Audio Solus headphone vs the Beats By Dre headphones. The results might surprise you.
It’s no secret that I love Bluetooth speakers. They are just so convenient and require very little setup to get audio from your device to the speakers. Bluetooth enabled speakers allow you to roam your home or office with your device without being tethered to the speaker with an audio cable or worse, a dock. These speakers work with any Bluetooth enabled device which makes them perfect for multi-device owners. With that said, Edifier just announced the availability of their latest audio solution, the iF335BT Bric Connect.

The iF335BT Bric Connect provides the capabilities of a much larger device in a smaller form factor. It produces a total power output of 12 watts RMS, through two, 2¾ inch (70mm) full range speaker drivers with bass enhancement via the reflex port. Not only that, is also includes a built in mic for speaker phone capabilities as well as an included remote that can answer, decline and end calls from a distance, change input selection, or navigate tracks as well as adjust the volume.

This is for those who want a much larger sound than the tiny portable speakers we’ve looked at in the past. If you’re interested in the Edifier iF335BT Bric Connect, it’s available now for $99.99 and also check out the full press release below for more details.

If you’re looking for an audio solution for your mobile devices that doesn’t involve wires or device specific audio docks, your best bet is to find an audio solution with integrated Bluetooth capabilities. I prefer Bluetooth speakers mainly because I like to keep my mobile device on me and not shackled to a wire as well as the fact that with a Bluetooth speaker, you can connect basically any Bluetooth enabled device to it. That means I don’t need a specialized dock to connect my iPhone, iPad, or Macbook to it. With that said, the latest Bluetooth speaker I’ll be taking a look at today is the new Divoom Bluetune-Solo. It’s a simple, tiny, can shaped speaker that allows you to play all your audio as well as being able to use it as a speakerphone.

Design

Looking at the Divoom Bluetune-Solo, you wouldn’t really think much of it. It’s a minimalistic design and if it were not for the Bluetooth logo and phone icon along with the giant X-BASS etching, you’d think it was just a small cup or paperclip holder. From the sides, there isn’t much to see. It’s wrapped in a matte colored, soft-touch like material that allows for easy grip. You can get these in a variety of colors with color matching speaker grills. I received the matte white color here and it looks very classy and sleek. Rotating the speaker, you’ll find and AUX out jack for daisy chaining speakers as well as a mini-USB jack for charging and AUX in.

The top of the Bluetune-Solo is mainly all speaker except for the plastic piece that breaks up the center of the grill with the X-BASS etched into it as well as using it as a place to house the Bluetooth/Call button. This button glows blue when on and you use it to answer phone calls as well as to sync new devices to the Bluetune-Solo.

The bottom of the device has 3 rubber “feet” that help keep the Bluetune-Solo planted on your desk and keeps it from sliding around. They are really rubbery and work very well. The on/off switch is also located down here and hidden from normal view.

Features:

* Wireless play from up to 10 meters away

* Built-in microphone for hands-free calls

* Extra bass in a small package

* 8-hour rechargeable battery

* Daisy-chain capability

Usage

Setting up the Bluetune-Solo is easy as pie. Like any other Bluetooth device, just turn on Bluetooth with your mobile phone or tablet and set it to discovery mode. Turn on the Bluetune-Solo and then hold down the top bottom for a few seconds until it beeps. It will now be discoverable. Just click on the Bluetune-Solo option on your mobile device when it appears and it will pair with the speaker. Done. The Bluetune-Solo will now play all audio from your device as well as being able to pick up phone calls and using it as a speakerphone.

What you can not do with the speaker however is use it to control any audio apps. The most it will do is pause music by pressing the top button and that is it. It’s a simple audio device but it works well for what it is.

Final Thoughts

Overall, I really like the Bluetune-Solo. It’s small and portable, but has a really big sound to it. It’s easier to carry around than some of the other Bluetooth enabled speaker systems out there and I like the fact that it can also be used as a speakerphone. The only real downside I can see to the little unit is that it doesn’t have dedicated audio control buttons on it so you’ll need to use your device to control everything. Other than that, the Bluetune-Solo sounds great and lasts a long time between charges.

When I bought my TV a few years back, I went with a regular 1080p LCD with 120 Hz. I could not afford to spend the extra hundreds on the new Smart TV’s that were coming out (prices have since reduced drastically). But at the time I didn’t think it was necessary or that I will really need it. With a laptop and a HDMI cable I should be able to stream content easily, right? Eh, not so much.

When all these media players and TV add-ons were released I was more than intrigued; I already figured that I needed one. What’s one more gadget on my entertainment system shelf? With Google TV I was sold. I have been a fan of Android for a long time, and I feel it would just make sense. Enter the Vizio Co-Star.

What is the Vizio Co-Star and What Does It Do?

The Vizio Co-Star is an accessory for your television. With the Co-Star you add Google TV capabilities to your television. Making it easier to stream contents and download apps; the Co-Star is supposed help your regular TV turn into a Smart (internet-capable) television. It can do the simplest of things like help you find content on your cable provider to giving you the full Google Android experience that’s beneficial for viewers.

Design

Adding this to my entertainment was a breeze. It’s a small puck like cube. Measuring 4.2 inches by 4.2 inches; you can fit it nearly anywhere. The design is simple; and people who have never seen a Co-Star before won’t know what it is. It’s very discreet. There are no lights or button on the top or the front. In the back; you will find the HDMI in, HDMI out, USB 2.0 port, ethernet, and DC in ports.

The remote is my favorite thing. Others weren’t too fond of it, but I loved the design. It has a million buttons to make everything easier. The front of the remote has your number pad, content control buttons (rewind, play , pause, fast forward, and record). It also has three dedicated buttons to content-streaming services, Amazon, Netflix and M-Go. Below is the mini trackpad, which was very helpful to me. You then have the “Vizio” button which when pressed will show you a menu of your most used apps and Vizio options. You have directional arrows and an “OK” button. The number pad buttons could be a little bit bigger, it was a little bit difficult not pressing another number when entering channels. The back of the remote has a full QWERTY keyboard, a directional pad to the left of the keyboard and four action buttons to the right of the keyboard (X, Y, A, and B). With all the buttons on the keyboard side, they should have added a dedicated search button. It only makes sense. For those who enjoy skinny and shiny remotes, they will definitely not like this one. It’s way bigger than the Apple TV remote or any other remote for that matter.

Experience

I have got to say that when I was opening the box, and connecting the device I was dreading that the setup would tedious. I’m glad to say that I was wrong! Setup was a breeze and took just minutes. After setting up your Google information, pairing the remote (it’s paired through Bluetooth technology, meaning no more pointing the TV at the box. Although I am still in the habit of pointing and pressing), entering your television information, verifying the cable service and area you were on your way to enjoy Google TV. Of course after everything was settled, there were a few updates on apps and the software itself. It’s up to version 4.6.0 (as of January 28th 2013). You can add more devices if you’d like (such as wireless speakers, etc)

I am not sure if the setup was easier because my HDTV is Vizio as well. I liked controlling everything from one remote. It was easy to use since the Vizio skin isn’t overbearing and sluggish. I tested the browser and it looked great on my screen. When pressing any of the three dedicated buttons (Amazon, Netflix and M-Go), it loaded in seconds. M-Go service is available now. I didn’t really use the OnLive gaming. I will update the post with that later on.

Searching for content was quick. It picked things up easily. For example, I was looking for an episode of Season 1 of “Scandal” (TV show), when it found it, it said that I could watch it for Free, but that’s only if you have a subscription to Netflix or Amazon Instant Video. So it means that there will be no additional costs if I already have those services.

I don’t see why anyone would surf the web on their TV. Maybe they just want the option. I tried Google Chrome and it went smoothly. Pages uploaded and refreshed in a reasonable amount of time. I enjoyed the Vizio app drawer that I mentioned earlier. It doesn’t take up the entire screen.

The UI is clean, and I really appreciated that. Getting used to a UI on your television set is never easy. No one wants to do that. The YouTube app is tailored to the Co-Star device and it runs very smoothly. If you thought you spent a lot of time on YouTube before you will be spending even more time on it now.

Should This Co-Star With Your Television Set?

If you’re into the whole Smart TV movement and can’t upgrade all the televisions in your house, getting a Google TV add-on is your best bet. The Vizio Co-Star is extremely affordable at $100. The Google TV experience has gotten a lot better since its initial release. I heard horrible things about the device when it was first released. Google TV is more to blame than Vizio as they provide the software.

That wasn’t the case with me though. With the Vizio Co-Star I got mostly seamless streaming and a great Google TV experience. If you tried it before and gave up when the Google TV software was unresponsive and clunky, I suggest you plug-in and try again. It really is a way better product after the software updates. I wish that it had audio inputs for guaranteed listening experience. You will have to settle for wireless speakers or connecting to your television or cable box.

For those of you cutting cords, it might not be completely reliable yet, but I think it’s getting there. Otherwise, I found it to be a great addition to my TV at an affordable price. I have had a great experience so far. So, yes at $100 and many options with the Google Play Store, the Vizio Co-Star should join your TV show.

As you know, the iPhone 5, iPad 4, and iPad mini now all use the Lightning connector which is no longer compatible with these old 30-pin docks. That means if you upgraded your devices, these docks were rendered useless and most likely you either sold them or moved them to some dusty corner. Guess what? You can make them useful again thanks to a little gadget called ‘auris.’

The ‘auris’ is a a Bluetooth receiver that plugs into any 30-pin Apple dock. This turns the dock into a full wireless system that you can connect to with any Bluetooth enabled device. That means not only will your old dock work with new iOS devices, it will also work with Android devices and Windows Phone devices. The ‘suris’ features Bluetooth 4.0 with AptX coding and can store up to 8 paired devices. It even features a built in mic that will convert your speaker system into a speakerphone unit. Very cool.

It doesn’t seem to cost that much either at only $49.99 which is a pretty decent price to upgrade your current dock. You can find these now at BiteMyApple.co, an online retailer specializing exclusively in successful Kickstarter products for Apple accessories.

Press Release

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – February 20, 2013- BiteMyApple.co, an online retailer specializing exclusively in successful Kickstarter products for Apple accessories, is now stocked and shipping the elegant ‘auris,’ a Bluetooth- based music receiver. Now, users can play, listen and control their favorite music through their existing dock from any iOS or Android device.

“The auris is a great solution to a problem many of us have encountered,” says Chris Johnson, Founder of BiteMyApple.co. “Sometimes we don’t want to dock our phones when listening to music. Or we have a really fantastic music dock that won’t work with the iPad or Android devices without long wires. Well, the auris enhances the way we use our docks and listen to music.”

The auris connects with any Bluetooth-enabled device including the iPhone, iPad, and most Android smartphones offering superior sound. The receiver stores up to eight paired devices. That means all you need to do is simply walk within the 33-foot working wireless range, and the auris will automatically sync and begin streaming your music from the last paired device.

The auris boasts Bluetooth 4.0 with AptX coding for faster device pairing and low power consumption. The AptX coding simply means that the auris offers hi-fi stereo quality with a wider dynamic range. The auris comes with a built-in microphone which allows you to receive calls, and volume buttons give the user full control of the music playback.

With the auris, there’s no need to find time to charge the receiver. Once inserted into the dock, it uses the power supply directly from the docking station. Users can continuously stream their favorite tunes for a longer listening experience while freeing up their smartphone to text, email, check Facebook and more. An AUX Out allows users to connect to the car stereo, amplifier, or headphones with the included AUX 3.5mm cable.

“The auris isn’t just limited to music,” adds Johnson. “You can use it to immerse yourself in a game or movie, too.”

The Auris is available in Arctic White and Piano Black for only $49.99 at www.bitemyapple.co.

First announced on Kickstarter in Fall 2012, the Auris quickly surpassed its initial funding goal of $40,000 reaching an astounding $131,911 in pledges.

About BiteMyApple.co

BiteMyApple.co was developed as a one-stop shop for successful projects from Kickstarter, a crowdfunding site that serves as a platform for innovators and entrepreneurs. Kickstarter designers often tell their stories and showcase their devices through video stories, and supporters pledge a donation or preorder the product. Once a project reaches its funding goal- the entrepreneurs deliver rewards to backers from all over the world. BiteMyApple.co participates with these projects and the Kickstarter community. The products found on BiteMyApple.co are some of the most successful Kickstarter projects to date with dozens of accessories for Apple products like the iPhone, iPad and iMac.

It comes with a built-in power adapter so it never needs to be recharged: just plug in and listen whenever, wherever- It’s so simple! A USB port allows the user to charge their mobile devices while enjoying the clear sound of the ‘outlet speaker.’ Additionally, an Aux In and Aux Out gives users more connecting options to hook up multiple devices.

A soft-touch finish creates a stylish and sophisticated appearance for the ‘outlet speaker.’ Lightweight and about the size of a juice box (3” x 5.35” x 2”), the speaker is small enough to take on vacations, business trips and more. Toss it into luggage, a briefcase or a purse to bring music to your next destination.

I love my mobile devices and carry them around with me everywhere. However, there are situations where I wish I could use my mobile device, but environmental factors prohibit me from using them. For instance, when I’m at the pool, I usually leave my iPhone in my bag or pants pocket so as to not accidentally get it wet or submerged in water. That means I can’t use it for listening to music and when someone calls, it’s a pain in the butt to run to where my phone is and pick up the call. Well, I believe I’ve found a solution for that and it’s called the Nuu Splash. Yes there are It’s a Bluetooth enabled speaker that allows you to stream audio data from your mobile devices and any other Bluetooth enabled device directly to the speaker. Yes there are other speakers out there like this but the Nuu Splash is waterproof and dustproof, something most other speakers do not feature.

Design and Build Quality

The Nuu Splash looks almost like the Jawbone Jambox, at least in size and shape. It’s a rectangular box with a minimal design with its sides completely covered in aluminum. The top however seems to be made out of polycarbonate as well as the bottom with the top of the Nuu Splash housing all the control buttons. It does look a bit more rugged than the more stylish looking Jambox, but I like the simple looking Nuu Splash more, especially in black. It has a cleaner, more streamlined look to it.

Looking at the top of the Nuu Splash, you’ll find only 5 buttons that have a slight recess to them. There are 2-buttons for track selection (if you’re using it for music), the play/phone button, and the two volume buttons. There is also a tiny hole for the mic. Other than that, it’s very clean and minimal up top, especially since the buttons sit flush with the surface, giving it a more elegant look. The top surface however is very shiny and if you get the black one like I did, it’s a huge fingerprint magnet. I find myself wiping it down every so often so it looks nice and shiny again.

On the back of the Nuu Splash, you’ll find a tiny rubber flap that houses the on/off switch, usb charging port, and an audio in jack if you have a device that doesn’t support BlueTooth. The flap feel fairly sturdy and closes back up tight in order to keep debris and water out, just remember to close it each time you open it.

Usage

The Nuu Splash is very easy to set up. First you’ll need to enable Bluetooth pairing on your device and set it to discovery mode. Next turn on the Nuu Splash and then hold the PLAY button down for a few seconds. After which it will show up as a Bluetooth device that you can click on and pair with. If it asks you for a code, it’s simply “0000″. Once paired, all audio sounds will be redirected to the Nuu Splash, this includes music, notification tones, and app sounds. That’s it. Just use your device as normal or if in a music player, you can control it with the Nuu Splash.

What’s cool is that if you’re using an iOS device, it will show the status of your available battery power in the top right hand menu as a little status icon. I’ve seen this with a few other Bluetooth devices and it’s always a welcome site to see so you won’t have to guess how much juice is left on your Bluetooth device.

Other than that, there’s nothing more I can say about the Nuu Splash except that it’s awesome now having to worry about water damage. I mean just to see how far I could take it, I even tried it out in the shower and it worked perfectly in there and sounded great.

Final Thought

I really like the Nuu Splash. It does everything I would want a Bluetooth speaker to do. It’s light, portable, easy to set up, and most of all, loud. I’m able to listen to all my music from a much better audio source than my tiny mobile device speakers and I also don’t need to worry about tangled headphone wires. The Nuu Splash is great for places like the pool or beach because you can just set your device to your desired playlist and then keep it in your bag for safe keeping. The Nuu Splash then lets you control most functions through it and because it’s both waterproof and dustproof, you don’t have to worry about it getting wet or covered in sand.

The Nuu Splash can be purchased in a variety of different colors – black, silver, red, blue, and green. My favorite however has to be the black or silver as they match up better with my Apple devices. You can find retailer near you here, though since it is a new product, supplies may be limited at this time. Still, I think it’s worth the price for something that sounds good, functions well, and is rugged enough where you don’t have to worry about getting it wet.
