Movie Review: The Game Plan, Starring Dwayne “The Rock ” Johnson

By ewilliams On January 28th, 2008

70077512.jpgThis past week, I saw “The Game Plan”, which came out on DVD, and Blue-Ray. It stars Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson as a pro football player named Joe Kingsman, who is living the american dream. He is the star quarterback of his team, and is one of the greatest players to ever play the game. He has a state of the art bachelor pad, and he’s the star of one of the biggest burger chains commercial ads. He has woman all around him, and he loves his lifestyle. Till one day there’s a knock at his door, and to his surprise it’s an 8 year-old girl named Peyton, played by Madison Pettis, who says she’s his daughter. From this point on Joe’s life is turned upside down as she tells him she will be staying with him for a month, while her mother is away. This is a great family movie, that will be enjoyed by all. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shows that he can carry a comedy movie all on his own, which is a good look for him, so he won’t just be typecasted in action movies. Madison Pettis, is outstanding as the 8 year old daughter. Her smile brightens up the screen, and she’s very lovable in this picture. The movie also stars Kyra Sedwick as Joe’s Manager, whos’ all about keeping his image untainted, and making him more money. Also in the movie is Roselyn Sanchez, who plays a ballet teacher, and Morris Chestnut who plays one of Joe’s closest friends, and teammate. If you have kids and are looking for a good, funny, heartwarming film, or your just a “Rock” fan, go buy or rent this movie. You won’t be disappointed.

Logitech Harmony One Advanced Universal Remote

By VerSe On January 24th, 2008

Harmony One RemoteAnother great Universal Remote from Logitech. The Harmony line is well known and I believe they still hold the crown of elite, when it comes to Universal Remotes. The Harmony One retails for $249.99 and will be coming out soon. Yes $249.99 may be a little pricey for a Universal Remote but remember this is the elite of the bunch.

The Harmony One has the same goodness as all the other models, it can control up to 15 devices. It also has activity buttons like watch a DVD, watch TV, listen to music and etc. This model also has a colored touch screen and comes with a rechargeable batteries and a base to recharge the batteries on. Me personally I wouldn’t pay $249.99 for this remote, I would get the Harmony 550 model (Which I just brought actually!) but there is no denying the style of the Harmony One; plus hey who needs 4+ remotes when one will do!

Why it took 2 days to buy a mouse from Best Buy…

By VerSe On January 22nd, 2008

Logitech Nano MouseI wanted a new laptop mouse for the longest time. I had been checking for the Logitech VX Nano Laptop Mouse, but the price kept changing. When the mouse was $72.99 they had 5000 of them in stock, when it went on sale for $49.99 they had none (which I swear is a set up cause I go to that store almost everyday).

So I work in midtown Manhattan, and there is a Best Buy on 43rd and 5th Avenue. I was on Bestbuy.com and I seen the mouse on sale for $49.99. I made a move on it, I ordered it and paid for it on the site, and chose the 5th avenue store as the pick up location. As I head to the store earlier than I was suppose to, before I go to the pick up area, I go downstairs just to see if they had the mouse in stock. They had 10-14 of them on the shelf, so i go to the pick up area. First the Salesperson can’t find my order in the system, and after some time said I had to wait for the second email that says your pick up is ready. Ok granted I got there early, so I leave the store disappointed but that is fine. So why do I then get a email from bestbuy.com that says the store doesn’t have none in stock. I called bestbuy.com and the rep tells me according to her system they don’t have none. I’m like Miss that can’t be as I was just in the store, and they have like 15 of them. The salesperson had a guy bring it up to me, they just couldn’t find my order number, so they do have it in the store. This rep is going to tell me well in her system they don’t. So I have the option of canceling the order and then going to the store and buying it (which I can’t do cause then I have to wait 4 days for them to release the hold on the money, or I would be double charged why I waited for the release), having them ship it (which they won’t do overnight even though it is a mistake on their system and she said it would take 3-5 days, horrible), or having her select another store to pick up.

So even though I’m annoyed now, I ask about the one on 86th street and Lex. She changed it to that, but guess what! I have to wait another 45 mins to a hour for another email saying when I can pick it up. So now on top of them wasting my time even though the store did have it. I have to wait 45 mins to go to another store to get it. I wait an hour and I get the pick it up now email. I go to the 86th street Best Buy and Ii get the mouse. I get all the way home and pull out the mouse only to see they gave me the wrong one. Now I didn’t know cause there is 2 models, the VX Nano laptop mouse, and the VX Revolution, and they look almost exactly the same. So it is now 8pm and I make a mad dash to the Best Buy in Mt. Vernon to exchange it. I make it there by 8:30 (they close at 9pm) and the lady tells me they can’t exchange it cause it was picked up from the 86th street one. I’m like isn’t a Best buy store all the same, she states well it isn’t from our inventory so we would be minus one now. I’m like this makes no sense, you guys having be messing me up all day with mistakes and now I have to go back to the other store to fix it. She says well the only way I can do it is if you return it and then buy this one here (which again if I refund it, I still have to wait for the money to be taken off hold) so she is basically saying I would lose the one they gave me, I wouldn’t get the new one, and I would be leaving the store with nothing and out the money I paid until 4 days later when the hold got released. So now I’m pissed. And I head home.

So the next day I go back to the store on 86th street and they change the mouse and that is why it took 2 days to buy a mouse from Best Buy. Beware of Bestbuy.com and the Store Pickup option!

diNovo Mini, Wirelessly Control your PC

By VerSe On January 22nd, 2008

diNovo Mini 1If your like me, you have already figured out that is it great to have your PC Desktop or Laptop connected to your HDTV. Since the invention of Window Media Center, the goal of having your entertainment center hooked up to your PC was a central part of the plan. Well if you are like me (and I would hope so if your reading G Style), you don’t really want to use a keyboard and mouse that is design for the “Desktop” environment on your laptop of table to control the PC connected to your HDTV. This is where the diNovo Mini comes in.

diNovo Mini 2 This palm sized device allows you to control your Desktop or Laptop through Bluetooth. It has a keyboard with back lighting so you can see in low light, and dual-purpose Clickpad. This Clickpad allow you to use it to point and click or as a directional pad when going through menus and making selections. Any the battery lasts a long time, it has a rechargeable Li-ion battery that can last month between charges. And if that wasn’t enough it can even work with the Sony Playstation 3.

We will see if Logitech will send one over for us to review and test, and if it performance as good as I hope, I know I’ll be in line to get one when they come out. The diNovo Mini is expect to go to the US in late February and will retail for $149.99. For more information check out www.logitech.com

New in Theaters Review: Cloverfield

By ewilliams On January 20th, 2008

Cloverfield Poster1-18-08….More than 6 months ago this date was the only information we had on a movie that was going to have the Statue Of Liberty’s head decapitated. In later months the secrecy was deepened, when the writer offered only the name “Cloverfield” as the name that was on the screenplay. A name he said was from the town he grew up in, thus adding even more anticipation as to what this movie was about. We knew it was a monster, from the path of destruction it left, on the posters image. What we didn’t know was what type of monster it was. Well, we all got to find out this weekend, when “Cloverfield” opened at the theaters. Let me be the first to tell you that the monster is this movie itself. It ate my hard earned cash, and I felt violated afterwards. I should have known, when most of the hype was just over the poster alone. Yeah the poster was awesome, a headless Statue Of Liberty, a path of destruction leading into the city from the waterfront. This has to be a great monster movie, look at the poster. Well this is a perfect example of not “judging a book by it’s cover”. This movie sucked in so many ways, I actually wished the writers strike had started before it was written, therefore preventing it’s release all together.

First of all it’s starless, so you won’t recognize anyone, that is except for T.J.Miller who plays “Hud”, our video documentor through the movie’s events. He actually is on a show called “Carpoolers” on ABC. I hope he wasn’t using this movie to further his career. The whole movie is filmed by “Hud” through a camcorder. Now the whole nights events are supposed to have transpired in a seven hour period. In this movie these people jump around Manhattan, like it’s a 20 block island. There is no way they could have done all that they did in 7 hours. This camcorder they used must have had “Super Charged Lithium” batteries. Nothing is explained in this movie, but I guess the writer didn’t have time for destruction of a city, plus a story to go with it. The movie runs about an hour and 34 mins. The first 20 mins is a party for a character named Rob, who is leaving for Japan. Then the monster comes, and the rest is camcorder running, with an occassional look back at the monster, as it seems to show up where ever these characters run. The movie ends just as it began, me waiting to see a monster destroy the city. I just happened to have my camcorder handy, so I filmed myself running out at the end of this movie, with the credits chasing me. This movie was nothing but hype. The writer and director were more excited about making a movie through the lens of a camcorder, than exactually giving the audience a movie worth watching. Out of 4 Statue Of Liberty heads, I give this movie the 1 Statue’s head that was thrown in the streets in the film.
