Dark Phoenix (yep, they dropped the X-Men, from the title) is the twelfth film in X-Men film series (if you include Deadpool 1 & 2). This is the second time they’ve tackled the Dark Phoenix storyline, and in both cases (X-Men: The Last Stand and Dark Phoenix), Director Simon Kinberg was on writing duties. In a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly Kinberg himself has admitted this is chance to do right by the source material, “It’s much more loyal to the original comic than X-Men 3, which told the Dark Phoenix story,” Kinsberg also suggested the film will be more grounded and more of a drama than a superhero film. Most of the X-Men: Apocalypse cast returns, James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, with Sophie Turner returning as Jean Grey with Jessica Chastain as “Smith”.

Here is the official synopsis of Dark Phoenix from 20th Century Fox:

In Dark Phoenix, the X-Men face their most formidable and powerful foe: one of their own, Jean Grey. During a rescue mission in space, Jean is nearly killed when she is hit by a mysterious cosmic force. Once she returns home, this force not only makes her infinitely more powerful, but far more unstable. Wrestling with this entity inside her, Jean unleashes her powers in ways she can neither comprehend nor contain. With Jean spiraling out of control, and hurting the ones she loves most, she begins to unravel the very fabric that holds the X-Men together. Now, with this family falling apart, they must find a way to unite — not only to save Jean’s soul, but to save our very planet from aliens who wish to weaponize this force and rule the galaxy.

Dark Phoenix will be out in theaters, February 14, 2019
