Capcom brings to us its first fighter for the Vita (Street Fighter X Tekken coming Q3 12′) and gladly it is not the original version of Marvel Vs Capcom 3. Instead they decided to give us a full fledged version of Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3 complete with all the same modes you loved and hated before. Now the biggest question is how would it stack up to its console siblings being on the Vita? Let’s dig in.
So out of the box you get a nice healthy roster of 48 fighters coming from the world of Marvel and other half from Capcom. Shuma-Gorath and Jill Valentine are still DLC only just like for the consoles sadly. Each character comes with multiple costumes and variations (about 5 a piece) and if your looking for more there is tons of DLC available also at a price.
Graphically this game looks excellent on the OLED screen of the Vita, much better then expected. I have never noticed any slowdown during intense 3 on 3 battles playing this game since its release. The only thing slow about this Vita version is the time it takes to load. Between starting up a mode, going match to match, even the time it takes to load a character at times is painful. Just make sure you have tons of time on your hand. Also the backgrounds don’t move like they do on the console versions.
The Vita version still has the same modes as the console version such as Offline, Online, and Heroes & Heralds (my favorite). The only mode really added is “Touch” which gives you the ability to play thru the game just doing swipes and gestures across the screen. I actually found it alittle cheezy as all i have to do is tap the screen repeatedly to do moves and specials. I played it one time and found it boring with no skill and haven’t gone back to it since. I found the default controls to be pretty good. The D-Pad feels great, likewise the face buttons. It would be nice if you could map the rear touch panel for button use like in BlazBlue: Continuum Shift EXTEND. But if your a big fighting game lover you will be happy with the standard controls.
Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 on the Vita is good way to show what potential buyers are missing as it is a definite piece of eyecandy with smooth gameplay. I would have liked to have seen an extra exclusive game mode (touch doesnt count) and I hope they can do an update for these load times.
Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 is available in various retailers and also on the Playstation Store.
